One thing that really bothers me about Eli: The (current?) lack of grids for their mods

p.3 #2 · pros and cons profoto and elinchrom

Marcin Harla, thanks for straighting thigs out, as I copy pasted comments from others over the strobist site.

stuuke, the reason I talked abou the modifiers is that somepeople talk as if profoto has better or more modifiers. I am just trying to get the facts straight.

Drew Gardner also shoots Elinchrom, llok for his epic series which i think is amazing, The pro's use many lights, but mostly profoto and elinchrom. And I think it;s because worldwide they are the easiest to get their hands on.

After all these reactions and about 50 to 75% of Elinchrom users telling me EL is great but if you have the money go profoto I thought it justified a calculation to see how much the price difference really is. So I made the following setups. I searched for 2 big lights and 2 small lights mainly for outdoor and but the possibility to work on a fixed powersource indoors, this is what I came up with;

profoto; 7b + 2 pro heads(€7460.55) + 2actub600kitairsync €5653
Elinchrom: El ranger RX speepd + A lamphead(€3271) + 1quadra kit+extra battery unit €2803. And last 2 adaptor to use all modifiers €152.96

This is the best comparison I could make. I decided to leave out the light modifiers as the difference would get only bigger and I could use EL modifiers on the profoto heads.

Summing everything up profoto = €13113,55 vs EL = €6532,16875.
both have 4 strobes and 3 packs.
profoto would have more Watt(2400 vs 1900W)
El would be a about 6kg lighter.

Service here in the netherlands is as good from both brands, the only thing I have to drive an hour to get to EL and 15 minutes to get to Calumet(profoto dealers in Nl)

And the El dealer told me more grids where coming hehehe

Where in the Netherlands are you? Fotoflits is your best choice. They seem to have a personal relationship with Elinchrom and know things before most other dealers.

I was recently there at Frank Doorhof's studio. Best thing about the Netherlands? Stroopwafels.

I was refering to Fotoflits, and the thing is untill now I got the best service at Fotoflits.
In the Netherland you have 2 calumet dealers, 1 in Amsterdam and 1 in Rotterdam.
I have been to both and to my surprise I was treated much better in Amsterdam then in Rotterdam. Besides that many times they have better deals in Amsterdam.

I freind photographer arranges to try out things without out paying in amsterdam, you can forget that in Rotterdam.

That was one of the reasons why I started thinking Elinchrom. But I'll see where I end up, I think for what I do there is no judgment for the extra 6500 euros, which is almost a mamiya.

Agreed. Fotoflits seems like they are the best game in town or in this case, best game in country.

Well, all biases aside, in the end you need to ask yourself - "Am i compromising my light by buying elinchrom?" Unless you shoot the most demanding of sports and need the fast duration, i say no.

I have 4 RX600's, a Ranger RX AS, Quadra A, and all sorts of modifiers. If i were to build a similar kit in Profoto, i could probably buy a Hasselblad H3dII-39 or 31 for that cost difference.

Just something to think about.
