p.2 #1 · Profot D1 Air 1000, thoughts?

I bought a Dynalite XP1100 pack to go with the D1's. I have to say though I just haven't been using it. For shoots with no power available I almost always use my AcuteB 600 as it is just so damn convenient. I've been thinking of getting a 2nd one of the AcuteB's actually.

The nice thing about the Dynalite is you can quickly change out batteries and the extra batteries are not too expensive. It would be nice to see a better solution though...perhaps a profoto lithium pack for the D1's.

I was under the impression that a Vagabond wasn't enough juice for the D1. You are not having any issues?

I've powered two D1 500 Airs on the Vagabond II without problem.

I tried powering two D1 1,000 Airs on the Vagabond, and after each shot, the second D1 Air would turn off and I'd have to turn it back on. So clearly it didn't have the juice for 2,000Ws.

I don't feel super-comfortable relying on the Vagabond II to power the D1s, that's for sure. Can't wait for a Profoto battery pack for the D1 to be announced.

I've also considered the new battery-powered units they launched, but I really like the digital switching and don't know if I'd like to deal with the whole asymmetrical weird switches thing.

Was just now reading that it may actually be out on the 17th!

Also see some early discussion I had about powering a D1.

The 17th... sweet. I'll be looking forward to that one. Problem is with Profoto launches, a May 17th launch probably means it won't be available until December of next year or something.

Don't blame Vagabond - blame Profoto for not designing tolerance to the voltage drop present in all modest power batter inverters. Vagabond has been on the market for years, followed by Tronix Explorer years later. Vagabond will charge up 2500WS Zeus, or equivalent power Dynalite, Speedotron etc. or several thousand WS worth of AB.WL etc.

You won't see this problem on Einstein - it stays booted even at 35VAC input . . . by design. Looks like Air crashes at about 80-85VAC.

The D1s need sufficient current, not voltage from a battery/inverter to keep the recycle rate within their specs. The lights are designed to consistently deliver the same light quality, not just turn on and fire, when battery powered.

With PCB promoting himself and his gear all over this forum I can understand the bias here towards his products. Best is a highly subjective term. I would differ and suggest that there are many, many good products on the market and the PCB stuff seems to have come up in quality from the early days.

Any time you want to shoot a blind test comparing the Comet, Dynalite and a Profoto head I'm game. I have all three available.

I am game. Are you in Atlanta? We can do this at PPR. Right now I have a Dynalite RP system and a couple of Einsteins. If you don't have a Profoto D1 I think PPR does, along with current Elinchrom and Hensel and Speedotron (not sure if they have any of the Speedotron Blackline Force 10 or Force 5 monolights however.) gear. I really am brand agnostic, I just don't take sides, but I am going to be clear in my opinion and for a monolight I think the Einstein in terms of the best overall mix of features, performance and price but it isn't perfect.

Didn't hear it from my sales rep but yeah 17th is a d1 power pack.
Power 4x D1's at a time, weight is around 11kg (7b and b2 weight) and cost locally 1725$ AUD Inc our taxes.
Will power laptops etc also.

Pity it's that heavy.

Yes it's the same weight as their other battery packs but it's using 'Life' battery technology that will have much higher capacity. More power for the same size and faster recharge.

I'm near L.A.

I own D1 Air 500s, the Comets I referred to (plus Bowens and Balcar's latest) and can rent the SH2000 Dyna head. Let me give some thought as to how I could shoot a test and post images here for comparison.

Makes sense they'd take the existing base design of say a 7B or B2 and just re-engineer it as a D1 (and Acute, Compact, etc) pack - especially with the advent of the new lighter weight LiFe batteries.
