p.1 #1 · Profoto Head Advice

I'm the proud new owner of a 7b and am really liking it. Right now I have one head for it, the Pro 7b head, and I'm looking to add another head for location work. I'm trying to decide between another Pro 7b head and the full Pro Head. When using two heads on location, I would mainly be indoors. I like the 250 watt modeling lamp in the Pro Head and it comes with a Zoom reflection and extension cable. My concerns are the extra expense, size and weight, and extra power it may draw.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Steve

Unless you are going to be shooting with the pack plugged into a generator or into an AC circuit that 250 watt modeling light so is the cooling fan are going to drain your battery very fast if it even can be used on battery power alone and . . Are you also at some point planning on getting a D4 OR PRO 8 pack at some point?

If the answers to the power question are yes I'll be ysing AC power and yes I plan on getting a D4 or Pro 7/8 pack than get the Pro head.

You've just listed all the reasons for the 7B system and the disadvantage to the Pro systems.

Seems to me you've answered your own question.

Yes, I think I have. The b head makes more sense for my needs. Thank you both for the input.

There is a switch on the ProHead to turn the modelling light off. The light in the 7b-Head would stay on. I only need the modelling light in the main light for focussing and the others can be turned off as i know what the lights usually do.

If you hook up ProHead to Pro-7b your modeling light will default to 100W anyway. Not only that, but efficiancy is higher if you use 100W lamp (you can use 100W lapm in the ProHead).

ProHead will not use more energy then ProB head as the fan is not working with Pro-7b packs.

If you are planning to buy D4 or 7a or 8a packs in the future, then ProHead may make sense as you can use it with any of them. Otherwise stick with ProB heads for Pro-7b packs for lower weight and cost.

This is my experience:

If you use the modeling lights on the 7b the battery will drain quickly. I have the B2. The shop I bought it from said I´d be able to use the modeling light continuously with the universal power adapter, which I have as well. Well... It´s less than 50 pops on full power and the battery is drained completely. This is with two ProB heads. Bad info from the only importer of Profoto in my country.

So you´ll have to use them for 5 or 10 seconds or whatever the times are. They should have made an accessory for these packs that would allow you to bypass the battery completely, like on the AcuteB 600s.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I ended up purchasing a 2nd ProB head.

With two heads and modeling lights on even Universal Power Adapter won't keep up.
Profoto actually states on their website that using Pro-B2 WITHOUT the modeling light you get ALMOST the same capacity as the AC generator.
Your dealer gave you the wrong info, which is a shame.

I agree that they should have an accessory that allows bypassing the battery. For the price UPA definitely should allow just that.
