Glass first was usually good for past generations, but now they are making such big jumps in technology in the actual camera bodies. Look at the stops you gain going up to the D3S compared to one previous generation. The usable stops you gain are immensely useful for controlling your shooting instead of conditions controlling the photographer. I personally cringe when handling files from a D90 compared to files from a D700.
