yeah the way i got my grip off was a small flat head and then figured out which way the gear needed to turn and then hit it with a rubber mallet..they thing is they are on there soooo tight that you need something like the mallet to loosen it. I must say i didnt enjoy using a hammer on my 5dII
I had the exact same problem, I was able to get the grip off with the above mentioned "screwdriver and mallet" method. I have a 40d also with grip, so I took it apart to see if the wheel was the same, and they are identical. The part number that I found online was CG2-1365-000. However when I called canon parts, they told me that the BG-E6 has a unique dial assembly and a different part number. So I ordered one (about $25 with shipping) and will have it in a few days. I am curious to see if they changed it at all with all of the problems with it, heck maybe it is metal now (we can only hope). I will update if this is the case.
I ordered a new 20d grip assembly for a friends lp-e6 and the gear worked perfect...so i doubt there is anything different from the 5dII grip and 20d or newer... $25 fix for that one.
Bringing this thread back up..has anyone had this taken care of under warranty? I have this problem with a 1.5 month old grip but I believe I can still remove the grip from the body. I'm not gonna send this thing in if they are going to charge me to fix it if I can fix it myself for $25(which is ridiculous as mentioned considering the cost of the dang grip). I have had canon grips on every body I have owned and never had this problem but last night I turned the knob to tighten it up and *CLICK, CLICK* and now it has about 1/2 inch play back and forth. Kinda pissed. Thx.
i doubt theyd cover it because it may be "user error"....which is stupid sense it cost way to much! but give them a call...if it dosnt work, i have fixed a 5dII grip just with these parts http://www.uscamera.com/cg2_1365.htm pretty cheap
Wonder how hard it is to get that dial with gear and get it cut on a cnc machine with a small peice of billet aluminum. I could ask if someone sends me a dial.
