I recently dropped a brand new 105f2 and just got a bill for $300 now my 105 is $1,300. It sucks but it happens. Man that really sucked I can still hear the sound. There is nothing worse than loosing control of your kit. First the slow motion then the sound and then the visual. Then you wait for the bill
sorry for your troubles. Here's the deal, here's my perspective on the matter. Do you make money with the gear? Did you make money shooting anything with it? If you made more than it's worth, then it wasn't it vane that your D300 shutter died, it happens, sadly. We take hits all the time. Chargebacks, losses, stock market crashes, some of lose our jobs, but in the end we bounce back. Don't let this turn you off of buying used bodies, or gear, some fail, some live way beyond their expected capacities.
on another note, a shutter unit costs about $35, but the labor should be in the $200-$250 range.

Sadly I wish this was the case but it's not exactly. I sold my 1Ds which I have made some extra cash with, and was looking for better iso performance and a used D300 seemed to be about the best for the money. I bought the D300 used March 22nd for $975, UPS dropped it off March 25th, shot approx 200 frames and was really impressed and excited to put it to work, then March 26th, shutter failure. Dropped it off March 29th with UPS and off to Nikon (this is the same day the grip arrived, lol). April 1st, I get and approve an estimate of $236, April 2nd I call to check on it and they say the approval never went through so I have to do it again. So now it'll at least sit there over the weekend, crossing my fingers they get to it early in the week and there is some chance that'll I'll get it back before next weekend. Bummed that I'm already gonna miss Easter pictures with my kids.
One thing I have learned in the whole matter, besides not buying used anymore, is the importance of a backup body. I cringe at the thought of this happening during a job. Luckily I don't have anything going on right now. But that is the first thing I pick up as soon as I get some extra cash.
