Thanks Brian and Kenny. The two smaller eyes gave it away!
Kenny, yes, shot with that diffuser. Not enough diffusion perhaps. Going to add one more layer. I'd have used an opaque white plastic cup but i just couldn't find any at my local Carrefour....
I have found that for me adding layers of diffusion material doesn't help diffuse the light, it just blocks it. To get better diffusion you need to find better diffusion material. I've made more diffusers than I'd like to admit and have tried the packaging wrap you are using and I found that it doesn't diffuse as well as say white rip-stop nylon or even an ordinary paper towel.
I find diffusing my MT24-EX twin flash heads about as hard as it gets. I'm finding that what ever you use, try to leave a gap between the front of the flash and the diffusing material. This helps to spread the light. I've currently got 2 layers with a 10mm gap between each. Trouble is, the outer layer just about touches the subject. Not easy. Next attempt might be to fire both flashes through the one large diffuser.
Great shot by the way!
cheers,
peter

Hi Peter
That's why I came up with the cup diffuser. I was trying to build some softboxes for the MT24EX, but there just wasn't enough space. Also you've clearly got the flash diffusion principles sorted out because one of the secrets of getting it to work is spreading the light before it hits the diffuser. If you are interested I started a thread, which is really just trying to brainstorm the issue as I am working on it at the moment. I have quite a few ideas about improving macro flash diffusion, and all I need to finish them off are finding the right materials and a bit more free time - at the moment I'm a bit tied up sorting out some other stuff. Hopefully I will soon be able to devote a lot more time to photography. Ideas on macro flash diffusion
I use the mini and it works pretty well a close distances, but I'm going to try to tweak it a bit to get the light a bit softer and I'm also going to start messing with some DIY applications as well. All of the recent macro stuff, actually the majority, on my www was done with the mini.
Thanks for commenting,
I checked out some of the macro images. Seems reasonably diffused light is produced by the mini. I think I'll try it, but if you like some of your modifications please post the results and technique. Off topic, but your Sig 50/1.4 has nice bokeh.
