Nickle,

Right now with just a few apps running (photo shop, LR but these are idle as I type this) it runs at about 42-44C,

Under Prim95 8 threads it tops as mid 70's. Under normal conditions which includes MP4 video encoding, photo editing and 3d gaming (not that much), it never comes close to those temps though as disk bandwidth and other IO bandwidth is more limiting than the pure on core data set calculations Prime95 does.

At 4.2 GHz it was up in the 80's and still climbing when I killed the test as I felt it was already to high and no point in continuing. This is in a well vented Antec case (2 large 5" fans on top/rear and 2 smaller 120mm in the front and the PSU in the bottom).

But again, all that said, this is at 3.8 already 1.2GHz over standard clock and if the OP doesn't intend to OC then he shouldn't have any issues with stock cooler unless he really screws up the case airflow. If he wants to OC then, sure get a better cooler. I never suggested anyone else to run OC on the stock, just at OEM clocks.

I just didn't find anything suitable locally when I put mine together and thought i just try to see how well it works on the stock one. Been about 8 months so far. Though I have a program watching my core temps with an alarm at 80 which would force a system shutdown, but it have never gotten there. One of these days, I may order a different cooler if I feel the urge to play with it.

i plan on doing a mild overclock to 3.8-4.0, and since i do alot of batch editing i might as well make sure it can handle sustained loads. thanks gain for everyone help. I ended up getting all the stuff on there with a couple extra bits. Ill be using a seperate SSD for Scratch and working drive.

, Up until the Core2 and I7 that was not considered "mild" OC... used to be that you could get a few hundred Mhz(read 100-300 Mhz on a 3ghz processor) out of OC unless you had a serious cooling rig with liquid cooling.

turbodude,

Did you wind up getting the V8 heatsink?

yes sir, its a beast and a half. I considered alot of other coolers, but three of my local buddies have this cooler and are able to go to 4.2 on it and keep great temps, and they are gamers, I also considered a Zalman but ended up with this beast. Its really rather large. I was actually taken back on how large it was preinstall. and its quirky mounting. But all in all im happy with it, i think it will work really well.

I just want a measly 4.0 lol but in all honesty ill prob keep it at 3.8 if i get it stable with really good temps. i dont think the extra .2 will give me noticeable gains. To me alot of those Oc'ers like to push it just to have bragging rights and to say they beat out the more expensive cpus

ah yes. way back when. My first real Ocing experience was when i went e6400, i clocked that one at 3.1 on water. But felt it wasnt really that much of an improvement for my uses, and currently im using that box right now. It will be turned into a Media/File server. I also plan on upgrading my router currenty im still using an old linsys 54G, any suggestions? I want to move up to gigabit.

turbodude,

Can you get to the RAM with the V8 mounted? I know the V10 covers the RAM but was curious with the V8.

Yeah, 4.0 is like a status symbol, but once you're in the upper 3's, you may not see noticeable gains, just as you said.

There is evidently a lot of variance between chips and how they perform and maintain stability. IOW, one guy's i7/930 can be cranked up tremendously while another 930 unit has stability problems under load. I've run all kinds of benchmark tests and my i7/975 is stable throughout, so I guess I've got a really good one.

Yeah, I'd be overclocking comfortably until my voltage got above 1.3V (maybe reach 1.35) on a 920/930. Then I'd look for what was stable. That'll be a nice computer there.

My build is a bit more conservative, but that's okay for me:
i7 860
big shuriken HS (small case, might be able to squeeze a H50 in there instead)
gigabyte p55 ud2 mobo
4 gb ddr3 1600 gskill ram, will add another 4 gb later, upon necessity (I don't really batch photos)
? graphics card (likely a used gtx 260 or gts 250, since I want to play around with CUDA)

I hope to get about 3.4 GHz out of my cpu, but we'll see how I do on heat management. Anything will be notably faster than the present 1.7 GHz Pentium M laptop I am running now ;-)

Yeah the board i have it doesnt cover the ram at all. So far so good i have a win index of 7.5. With the lowest score being my gfx card.

Currently i have the SSD for OS and apps and still have about 40GB left, and i have already installed office 07, Photoshop cs4 64bit, lightroom 64bit and Photo Mechanic.

two of the Spinpoint 1TB F3 are currently in a RAID0 config, and 4 WD 1TB greens will be in RAID5 for my file server for backup. If i get another 2 spinpoints ill probably switch the RAID0 to RAID10 just for some redundancy, while still have the RAID5 in my file server as backup. But so far this thing screams at a stock clock. I cant wait to OC it. im currently readin oc procedures with turbo boost, etc

Yeah o head about th crazy variance of the 930, and sadly i have a batch thats considered slow, but wills till clock to 4.0 easily, its just the overclockers get some crazy when they cant touch 4.5-4.7
