I also modified the use of the Cokin Z holder much like you have shown: moving the lens adapter to the front slot of the filter holder. This places the lens threads within the holder "hole" and functions much like the wide angle adapters in the Lee system. It moves the front of the lens much closer to the filters. I find the clearance of the plastic pegs to not be a problem. Unlike your example, I removed two of the slots, this reduces the chance of vignetting and makes it easier to pack the filter holder into my bag. Two remaining slots are sufficient for my use. I do not use a Cokin CPL.

how well does the whole adapter rotate when using 4x6 filters?
In my setup the lens adapter ring is in the first normal slot on the front of the Cokin Z filter holder. See the pictures in my link above. The Cokin adapter is a bit thicker than a normal 4X6 filter so the fit is a bit firm. Firmer than if the adapter ring were mounted in the normal position at the back of the holder. However the entire filter holder assembly rotates quite easily on this adapter ring. Its a very comfortable amount of friction for this purpose.

Hey Mike,
Good to see someone else is using almost the same configuration like mine. I have a dedicated bag that fits the Z holder with Z164 perfectly. I keep the slots actually to protect the expensive Z164 so that it's not too exposed to be scratched.
