I love my 5D but like most owners have been very frustrated with the lame focusing system. Canon folks hoped the 5D Mark II would solve the problem, especially after Nikon dropped great focusing systems into BOTH the D300 and D700. They didn't. I haven't made the switch and my investment in L glass, particularly primes, makes me hesitate to do so. Yet, I rather longingly follow ads for D700 cameras, Nikkor zoom lenses and ponder my future. I don't want/need 22 megapixels and I don't want a heavy professional camera, but I do want full frame, good high ISO performance and full frame. Sounds like the D700...

Quite understandable. And if you do have an investment in primes that you like to shoot, it may be quite some time before Nikon has enough of them to satisfy that need. And even when (if) they do, the costs may be painful.

If you shoot primarily f/2.8 zooms, need a more responsive camera than the 5D/5D2, and 12 MPs is enough for what you shoot, the D700 and Nikon's f/2.8 zooms are top-notch.

I was in your situation last year. I had 3 5Ds. I had tried a 5DMKII, but the focusing and large file sizes were off-putting and I didn't see a discernible difference between the 5D and the II in the wedding work I was doing.
When it became apparent Canon was not gonna give me a FF 12 MP sensor with better focusing and higher ISOs, I switched to the dark side. It cost a bundle and Nikon's lens selection is still nowhere near where Canon's is, but it's getting there.
Nothing's perfect. One of my SB900s died after 2 months. Never had an issue with any of the 10-12 580s I owned.
Still, I'm glad I made the switch. I love the focusing and the high ISO performance.
I never needed vide in a DSLR, Canon added what I didn't need and missed adding what I valued.
Nikon met my needs, enough to cause me to bail.
YMMV.

I agree, they are. There are plenty of them, and they are so dammned expensive too!

What astonishes me is the sheer level of hate and vitriol that I am seeing directed at RG by Canon Shooters. Comments that he is sponsored by Nikon, that Nikon supports him, and he is biased because he has Nikon ads on his website.
You've been a member since '05 and this surprises you? With some (not all or even most) its not about photography, its about all things Canon.

I must say that the Nikon forum is by far a more pleasant place to be.

"my investment in L glass" glass holds its used value very well, especially due the the price raises. If you think your primes are good, Nikon zooms are legendary.

I don't spend time on the Canon forum.
If you are bored its great entertainment. I pop in there from time to time just to see whats going on in Canon land... one mention of Nikon being good and you get 6+ pages of people trying to prove how Canon is superior in every way. lol
DXO Mark says that Canon doesn't make the best sensors in the world. Rob G can't get the 1D MK III or 1D MK IV to focus as well as he thinks they should work. And the real thorn in the Canon fanboy side is that Rob G likes the D3s autofocus better. And let's not forget that Popular Photography magazine named the D300 and D3X both as "Camera of the Year" for two of the last three years. Now if we can just convince Popular Photography magazine and DXO Mark to advertise on Rob G's website that thread over in the Canon forum would get real long.
You really have to try to justify your move to Nikon by bashing Canon ? More than RG, look at that thead, and read carefully the users who post sports pix..... So far so good By the way, I am selling my backup 5D to get a 1DIII. I have try one and was amzed by the result.. Problems happen sometimes, and Canon is big enough to make the right move.. Don't worry...
The fact is both system are good, with an advantage for Canon for Primes and Nikon for Zooms for what I have seen so far...

Do you know who Rob is and his history? If there's any professional shooter out there qualified to speak on these issues, it's him. He is the one who brought the MkIII's issues to light for Canon and was instrumental in their testing and fixing the problems.
If it wasn't not for people like him doing public testing, all the other pro's out there would be buying blind and running the risk of wasting hard earned $$$ on faulty products. RG saved me $4000 when I held off on buying a MKIII.

Huh? I'm not bashing Canon in the slightest, if anything I wish them well. I happily shot them for 15 years. Saying the MkIII was faulty isn't bashing, it's honest truth. Canon issued multiple fixes to the body, the blue dot, the sub mirror replacement, firmware updates etc... If you're excited about the MKIII and looking forward to one, power too you. Best wishes.
My justification for purchasing equipment is making a paycheck.
man, i still have a large place reserved in my heart for ol' canon (post getting rid of my stuff cuz of 1d III). there's a part of me that still likes their:
- cheaper prices for most things
- better availability
- larger used market
- newer tech (most lenses have ultrasonic motors)
- 85/1.2, 35/1.4, 65mpe, 300/4 IS, 100-400 IS, etc., just a more complete overall kit that is modernized for awesomeness
canon is still a strong player, don't let their 1d-series "screw-ups" (i put it in quotations cuz it's still likely arguable) throw you off. i still think the nikon and canon systems are very complementary and i'd still have both systems if i had the money to support both.
even if RG is right: remember he's measuring these systems up to a yard stick that most of us won't/ can't reach. most of these cameras are more than good enough for each of us.
