If you were Canon or Nikon and heard about this great lens that sells for near $300 new and is as good as your $1600 lens would you possibly be motivated to "influence" the reviews by others of the cheaper lens

If you need a test to tell you if one lens is sharper than another, and even then it's up for debate, isn't the whole point kind of moot?
Then again, if that were the case I guess this forum would be a lot quieter.
Your point is well taken. There is value, however, in knowing what specific areas
a lens excels or disappoints in; thus, the forum is filled with posts scrutinizing 100%
crops. But yes, most of what you need to know can be seen from a single
well-crafted image of reasonable size.
This is the thing about the Samyang/Rokinon/etc.:
For what most people want a large aperture 85mm lens for, this lens excels for
a small fraction of the cost of competing options.
are photozone final judgements useful at all? half the time I wonder if they even consider anything other than their sharpness measurements in their final judgement.
