+1 for the Kiboko - a fantastic bag for travel with a lot of gear.
Here is another bag I have hanging in the garage, more a "shooting bag" for long lenses - I fold it flat for travel, stuff it in my suitcase and carry the Kiboko.

This is the one I use for my 200-400 with body on lens. It's a great pack.
I saw your bag today in Adorama and it is pretty big. It would be great for traveling and bring several smaller lenses and a couple of bodies plus the 200-400mm VR.
The other one that I wanted to check out (Kinesis L511 Compact Long Lens Case 500) is not available in Adorama. And it seems that you need to buy an additional Kinesis padded shoulder harness to use it as a backpack.
The bag that comes with the lens (Semi-soft case CL-L2) is OK but it is only for the lens (and for storage). I am interested in something that would allow me to bring the lens and a body (plus the monopod) to Central Park or other places around the city using the subway.

What about the Nikon CL-L2? That's the one supplied with the lens and this is what Nikon says about it:
It is the one that came with my 200-400, and I can get the D300 and lens mounted into the bag, even with a 1.7TC fitted. It is well padded and compact.
I also have the Lowepro AW600 for my 500mm and camera mounted, it is a fair bit bigger than the CL-L2 and in my opinion overkill for the 200-400.
Have you considered or looked at some of the ThinkTank products? I have a Streetwalker HardDrive and it works GREAT with my 400/2.8 with a D3 attached (an a few other things). It's very comfortable as well. That's a backpack, and they have other options as well (rollerbags, etc)
If a bigger bag for more stuff is in order, I can put the 200-400 with a 1.4x TC on a pro body and it'll still fit into my ThinkTank Airport Acceleration backpack along with a lot of other stuff.
I have the 200-400mm and the CL-L2 case that came with it. At the same time I bought the Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 AW II Backpack. I usually like most things Lowepro, but I absolutely HATE the Lens Trekker! While it jas a lot of features, this thing is just too frigging big for my needs.
So I just took the stuffing out of the CL-L2, attached my D300 with MB-D10 Grip to the 200-400mm and inserted it all into the Nikon CL-L2 case afterall. It should be pretty handy when I shoot Eagles again in Iowa next week and shoot the Space Shuttle next month in Florida. I agree that the "NIKON" label on the back, is a pretty stupid idea by Nikon. They need to get their ego out of the way on this one. Is I was transporting the case, I would put tape over the embroidered logo, otherwise for short trips from my Jeep to location is not a problem.
Anyone wanna buy the Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 AW II Backpack?
Thanks,
Ken in Louisville
I've used the Lowepro 600AW in the past for carring both 300mm f/2.8 and 500mm, I found it a pain because once you put the lens and attached camera body in you had no room for anything else, I ended up putting small slip on cases for 70-200mm, 24-70mm and flashes etc on the outside, this set up would move around alot and nearly sent me off a cliff one day, so I got the Lowepro PhotoTrekker, it can take a lot of gear and is good on the back and nice and stable, the only thing I don't like about it is the weight of the bag adds a lot to the overall package. There are lighter bags out there like the Tamrac ones that can do the same job.
Have a look at the following websites that have reviews etc of camera bags;
I had a chance to see the Kata BP-502, really liked the design, I have one of there SB-907 for wedding work and it is a fantastic bag. If I getting a bag for transporting my kit for nature work I'd get one of these.

What about another of the ThinkTank Bags: the Think Tank Photo Airport Ultralight V2.0 Backpack? It is bigger than the the Photo Glass Taxi but it weights about the same?

Yes, I went to the site and read about it. I also read about this bag at Outdoor Photo Gear where I have been considering several models. I found it too pricey ($400) and a little too big for what I want. I would buy the Kinesis L511 instead since it has a similar size. The Think Tank Photo Airport Ultralight V2.0 Backpack sells for $170 and it is easy to carry as a backpack. The 200-400mm is about 17 inches long and the Think Tank is about 18 inches. I am concerned that it could be too tight for this lens. Anyway, thanks for your suggestion.
you are right it IS expensive. But it is so perfect in its design and layout. having spent many hundreds on bags that never quite worked. spending 400 ONCE would have Saved me a lot of money
Take a look at the Tenba LL-400. I bought it for my 500 AI-P,but just got the 200-400 which will replace the 500. Eyes not up to manual focus anymore (65).
I'd suggest getting the Tenba BPH-L backpack harness if you'll be carrying this set up farther than from house to car.
I can easily fit the 200-400 w/D300 or D3 attached, Wimberly full gimble, RRS flash bracket,
SB-800 and both TC-14 and TC-17 (inside top pocket). Not really light, but that;\'s why I got the BP harness.

I have a Ultra light, it's my base bag, but I don't think it fit my 200/400 w cam mounted. I love it, as well as other Thinktank products. Well designed & well made (fits under airline seat w/o computer.
Measure the length of cam and lens (if I recall you might need 22")

Thanks for the info. I have not seen the inside of this bag but I have a general idea of the dimensions. I have another question. Can you have the lens (detached) and the camera (D300) next to it? I need a bag that I can transport in the subway (sometimes crowded) and that I can have on my back while I shot with this lens. I don't want to be walking in the park for hours with a backpack that becomes too uncomfortable after a while.
