Here is the thing. If Canon were to produce a 200-400/4 they would moist (most) certainly discontinue the 100-400, a lens that still sells very well and is relatively affordable for a larger number of people. I don't have the numbers but if I had to guess I'd say that the 100-400, a $1500 lens, would outsell a 5-6K 200-400. Don't get me wrong I'd love to see a 200-400/4, I'm just looking at things from another perspective.
Huh?!?! That makes no sense what-so-ever. By that same logic there's no reason for Canon to make a 400/5.6 or a 400/4.0 since they make a 400/2.8...yet they all exists. Of course a $1500 lens will outsell a $6000 lens...and by a huge margin too! Canon would never stop selling a $1500 100-400/5.6 just because they come out with an exotically expensive 200-400/4.0.

Another data point, Nikon has both a 200-400 and a 80-400, when they released the 200-400 they didn't discontinue the 80-400, likely for the very reasons mentioned above
TBH I never thought of that. Guess we'll wait and see...
