I use a 300/4L with my 30D, and recently with my 7D.
Its a great combo. What time of day will you be shooting?
Hopefully I will try and keep my shooting to midday.
Obviously for any wildlife or birds i may be shooting earlier.
Anyway my 7D arrived yesterday and my first impressions are like....WOW! This thing is so much quicker and more responsive than my 5D I am so glad I bought it. Not had chance to take it out yet but just from the test shots in my room I can tell i'm going to like this body.
The instruction books a bit of a surprise as it's ...BIG lol. Gonna take me all weekend to work out all the custom functions on this thing.
Redmonkee,
A 5D or a 7D will work fine for soccer. Just make sure that your minimum shutter speed is 1/500th second or less. Otherwise you will see movement in the players.
Adjust your ISO to suit.
For behind the goal shots I would recommend a minimum 85mm or equiv. lens.
For out field shots I really think that 400mm is the best. Of course fast glass is better. f2.8 or faster is what you need.
Don't underestimate shooting from behind the goals. You can get some good shots of goalmouth action even though the opportunites are fewer.
For outfield shots try and make sure that the face of your subject is visible, even more important than the ball.
Follow the ball and snap your shots at every opportunity. In focus is the key and shooting just a little bit later is better than shooting earlier.
First time, most of your shots will be out of focus but don't worry, it will improve.
Soccer is a hard sport to shoot but very rewarding when you get a nice picture.
One more thing, don't forget off the ball incidents. They are sometimes better than the action on the field!
