IMHO, if Nikon will redirect the funds that are spent to develop the video technology towards developing better sensors and cameras, also will replace the costs for "built in video" towards a better camera, for sure 5 to 10% of people will leave dissapointed for Canon or other brands but 50% from other brands will migrate to Nikon... those PJ, wedding photogs, sport photogs, wildlife photogs, studio photogs... they will love to have better cameras without video... D700 is a huge success for Nikon and people still buy it after two years... and nobody complaints about the lack of video capabilities.
Be serious... nobody buy D3s because it has video.... but because its great specifications, its low light abilities, its unbelievable ISO, its frame rate, etc......Show more →
+1. Video is sucking up R&D resources for other innovative features. All the brands are doing it unfortunately, and video is here to stay. I suppose we will be paying $8500 for 1Ds MK IV and D4x bodies for the privilege.
PJ & wedding photogs are part of the market DSLR video is directed towards. There's been big $$$ spent here cross training for video and almost any wedding pro is going to welcome added income. Clients love 'rich media experiences'.
Video is a visual picture medium and dismissing it because of some traditional idea of what a camera should be, is in my eyes short sighted. It's a feature that adds value for some users, like TTL flash, spot metering, bracketing, etc... Not everyone will use it, but it's there. It just happens to be the biggest change since AF or autoexposure we've seen come along.

Sure... I close my eyes and I see how a pro wedding shooter is ceasing the tradtional old fashioned activity and use his D3s to record video weddings, when his assistant will simply take some snapsoths with his iphone...
I believe that whoever needs professional video will use a professional video camera.
FAKE!!! Just wait until the 23rd where nikon are having a press conference-I really hope there's a 35 1.4 an 85 1.4. Sigma are releasing 5 new lenses including the 85.

Yep, I said the same thing before. Nikon should abandon AF-S because Canon simply had the best USM.
High ISO, pffffffff. Canon was all over that.
24mm f1.4 lens. Forget it, rather they concentrate on some more consumer zooms like the 18-55mm f3.5 - 5.6. This is where Nikon is better.
I know Nikon had the first DSLR with video, but Canon has surpassed them in this area.
Nikon make the best ever film camera in the F6. This is where they should concentrate their energy.
Sure, consumer lenses are where the money is just like p&s sells tons more than slrs. But, Nikon simply owns high ISO battle with D3s and even D700. Canon lenses are plagued with focusing issues whether you think USM owns AF-S or not.
Concentrating on film camera may not be the smartest thing to do in this age, either. Nikon should concentrate on updating aged lens selections while developing D4 to leap frog like they did with D3 3 years ago.
The traditional old shooter has already retired. The forward thinking shooter is creating slideshows with 20 second video clips of rings being slid onto fingers and corset tops being laced. Welcome to the new think.

I don't think you guys get it. Improving old features is only 1/2 of what tech companies do with their development and research $$$, the other half goes into NEW features that will make people want that over something without it. WHY? Because history has shown that that is the way to survive. New features are a MUST. If Nikon does what you suggest, it will LOSE to Canon and it will cease to exist. That would be BAD for everyone.
Also, I don't think video is as hard to implement as you think. Basic video as they have it now is not much more than a rev of the electronics and the firmware, something Nikon and Canon are doing all the time anyway. Making it as easy and functional on a DSLR as it is on a dedicated video cam is the difficult part. But, Nikon and Canon better make it work or else the video cam makers will eat them alive ... after all, they have had still shot capability for years now, and they are getting better.
