Dude, you have to seriously reconsider the stuff you take with you. You can only stop and evaluate the photographic opportunities so much. :-) A rolling case will likely fit most of that gear. They have some pretty big cases out there, and it'll take the load off your back.

I've gone out to dinner with the following gear on several occasions....
1D, 16-35mm, 50mm 1.4, 70-200mm IS, 400mm 2.8 IS, monopod, 2x flashes, 1.4x, 2.0x, and misc stuff including batteries, cards, etc. That was probably the only 400mm 2.8 IS ever to enter that particular Dennys. :-)

Well, I don't normally have all that stuff with me. But consider the circumstances:

I was on a trip from Houston to the Dallas / Ft. Worth area for a long weekend.

I left early in the morning, and was going to show up at the Ft. Worth zoo at about 10 am (so, no time to head first over to Dallas to get my hotel room, as they wouldn't have it available, and would've added over an hour to my schedule anyway). That's the reason for the 500/4 IS, flash, ballhead, etc. And also the 300/2.8 IS, though I chose not to use it.

Later that afternoon, I was going to head over to a small club in Ft. Worth (never been there before, so wasn't sure exactly what lenses I'd need) to shoot a concert. This was after having dinner with my brother and dad, who had driven down to get some old stereo gear that I was getting rid of (did I mention I had *that* in my car, too?). Plus an old PC that I was getting rid of. Oh, yeah, I had my laptop with me, too, of course.

I had to get to the club early to make sure I'd get a decent seat (never been there before, so didn't know how crowded it might or might not be, how early I needed to show up, etc).

The next day I was attending an all-day type concert in the Dallas area, and for that I thought I might rather use the f/2.8 zooms, and possibly the 300/2.8 IS. Again, I didn't know the exactly layout of the venue, nor where I'd be able to get a seat, etc. My hotel was next door, so I didn't have to leave the stuff in the car THAT day (though it was all in my hotel room).

I'd never carry all that ON me (doubt I could) . . . that's also why I had multiple types of bags . . . for different circumstances.

I often don't know what I'm going to encounter on trips like this, and have multiple itineraries.

That's what I really worry about. That's why my photography car (a car I'll park anywhere without too much worry) is a 1987 Honda Accord.

How bout getting mugged when walking around. Since i don't even drive yet, cars don't worry me but i am scared of being mugged. Anyone have a solution to this? I have not gone anywhere where i have had to walk around but i will be in the summer. Unless mabey i should just not take my big case with everything in it when i go walking, but just put the 70-200 in the pouch and keep the 18-55 mounted and attach the pouch to my pants and make it look inconspicuous (sp?).?

I also worry about having my gear stolen while hiking, etc. This is why I carry pepper spray/mace (Sabre MK-3) and bear pepper spray with me in addition to my 9mm handgun. Living in California, I have to be very careful about the handgun to make sure I am not concealing or brandishing it, but I will carry it when I feel I'd rather get arrested for it verses the possible alternative.

BTW, no one called me on my previous post where I mentioned my S&W 45mm. That's one big handgun! Make my day Dirty Harry. I meant a 45 cal S&W. Now I carry a Kel-Tec 9mm when hiking. I also carry a Henry Repeating AR-7 when camping.

Personal CS mace/pepper spray in standard MK-3 police canister (ie lots of holsters available)

Bear pepper spray

Kel-Tec 9mm

Henry AR-7

That goes in Texas, as well, even WITH a concealed handgun license.

The weapon must be concealed, and heaven help you if you "brandish" it.

The big difference: we won't have any legal problems (well, at least not CRIMINAL legal problems) if we're unfortunate enough to have to use it to defend ourselves.

or how about you put your camera bag and laptop bags in your trunk so that the thieves can't see it.

Because some cars don't have trunks! I was the victim of a smash and grab and the punks weren't even going after the camera gear originally....they smashed only the front passenger window to get at the change in the ashtray (which I have since removed) and the cops figure they saw the two bags in the back of the rig and figured they hit paydirt. So, they got everything but my 10D and the 80-200 which was under some clothes and books.

And they did this in broad daylight while I was parked outside the newspaper where I work. Wonder if the parking spot marked "photo" had anything to do with it.

I recommend that photographers visit the local Home Depot and purchase a Greenlee box in a size that works for their vehicle. (These are the green metal boxes a lot of construction workers stow their tools in--they lock very securely with two padlocks that have just the key area exposed.) Pad and partition the box for your gear, bolt it in your vehicle, and lock your goodies in it when you're away from the car.

Mike,

Can I put two bags and a loose camera in one - are they big enough, but small enough to fit in the back of a small 4x?

How hard are they to bolt down...sounds like a guy thing with tools and stuff.

lara sounds like a good idea to me and where DID I put that drill thingy

You would really enjoy it here in England. It is now illegal to own a handgun let alone carry it. Even a pot of pepper (let alone a spray) could get you charged with carrying an offensive weapon and you could go to prison and get sued by the mugger!

Mind you, if caught, he could get a damn good slap on the wrist

We recently had a guy who had an obsession with stealing cars, valeting them and returning them a few hours later to their owners. This is obviously more serious than mugging so we have given him six years in prison. How's that for rough justice

A photography forum probably isn't the best place to discuss the merits or detriments of particular weapons, or the practice of owning/using them.

Sure it is if it's mentioned in passing. I was just mentioning I had made a mistake. After all 45mm is pretty big.

The subject was addressed by me as to what I do for protection when I'm out in the middle of nowhere to protect myself and my 'photography equipment'. It's the same as if someone where to ask what is in my pack when I'm out alone. Yes, the guns are there, but so is a ham radio (HT) with all the local police and fire channels programmed in, an emergency J-pole antenna, a GPS, a flare gun (pen) with a few bear bangers, a laser pen, a signal mirror, a survival blanket, vacuum packed toilet paper, a water filter, etc... the list goes on and on (well it depends on the pack).

I made it clear I also carry pepper spray. This would always be my first line of defense if possible. This is also why I carry my handgun concealed. The only time I would ever pull it is if I felt I wasn't going to get out of a particular situation alive. I certainly don't want a possible mugger to know I have it, but I don't mind if they know I have pepper spray. I'd much rather just give them my stuff and walk away, but if things go wrong, at least I know it's there as an absolute last resort. BTW, I also carry a California legal knife. I should also mention that black bears and mountain lions are quite common in some places I visit.

I had, and have, no intention of turning this into a gun issue thread, and in fact I was considering mentioning some of what I just did after a few few responses, but decided not to because I didn't want to start moving the thread in that direction, and still don't want to.

I always feel comfortable discussing ANYTHING with ANYBODY, but as has been proven time and time again, the Internet is not always the best place to try this, since you don't really know who you are discussing it with or how they will react.

So... how about those Lakers?

Tinted windows and a car alarm could not hurt. If I stop for food, I will only go into a restaurant if my car is in site. The most important item is the shot cards, they always come with me. The rest is insured, you can only worry so much after taking proper precautions.

Good point... I always ask to sit in a particular place (booth) that not only allows a good view of the car but also allows relatively close access to the door so I can get to my car quickly. The funny thing is, what would I do if I could get to the car while it's being burglarized? Challenge the SOB who is stealing my stuff who is six inches taller and a hundred pounds heavier than me? Do I pull my gun? Nope, just call the police and hope for the best I guess...

I like the idea of that big steal box, problem is - my lease company wouldn't be very happen when I start drilling holes in the boot of my company car.
Second problem - when I'm on a photo trip, I frequently rent a car so that wouldn't work either.

I usually put my gear in the trunk at the hotel or when I leave my home - not at the parking lot. Then again when someone puts a gun to my head, they are free to take my camera bag. It's all covered by insurance, but would be nice if I could keep my CF cards though.

I usually leave my X-drive or imagetank in the hotel, in a locked cabinet or room safe when possible.

That is what I do too with digital. It is similar to how we used to carry our processed/exposed negatives with us anywhere we go, and rather left camera gears locked up in trunks if carrying the camera gears were not fleasible. Gears can be replaced but not images.

Good question. Here in Texas, you can use your weapon to stop a felony (which this would be) AT NIGHT. Or even to stop a "fleeing felon" AT NIGHT.

If I had a large portion of my kit with me, I think I'd have to "challenge" the bad guy (with gun drawn), even in daylight. Most thieves like that are unarmed, and will do ANYTHING to avoid a confrontation.

I'm pretty sure that I'd be "no-billed" here in Texas, even though I'd be in technical violation of the law.

A PJ I know who often worked in some really bad neighborhoods told me what he did- He installed a cable and lock between the trunk lid and the spare in such a way as when he unlocked the trunk- (or bad guys pried open the trunk) it would only open a few inches- just enough to expose the padlock.

Actually, I thought about bringing the tripod. But, I had used the tripod before at the Ft. Worth zoo. It's so crowded there, that I ended up using it as a monopod most of the day.

Jason Hutchinson took his tripod (same as mine, Gitzo 1325) that day, though.

He uses the full Wimberley Head, though.
