Why not rely on the AF light? I mean, is AF light any worse with the 35 than any other lens, Zeiss or not?

I'm hoping to get my 35 tomorrow or Saturday.

Joe,

In my experience, the AF confirmation light gives an approximation of focus but not necessarily the precise point of focus. That is why I bracket focus, tweaking the focusing ring within the range indicated by the AF confirmation light.

It will become clearer to you when your lens arrives. I hope it is tomorrow or in my case today.

Yeah, using the light is pretty dicey for me at wider apertures too.

Thanks for the images as well as the breakdown on your success rate, Philber. I am encouraged. In the end, I think practice is indeed what will serve me best. Calvinjax - I think the focus confirmation is one of those things that almost immediately takes over one's process. I have found myself hypnotized by that little green light rather than looking at what I am shooting. Amazing how quickly one gets attached to AF even after years of using manual focus.

Paul - great shot - (and from a moving vehicle to boot!)

Philber - gotta love that ZE-35 - I bet we could see the rivets on the Eiffel Tower if you cropped it!

Frankly, Rick, I was sorry I didn't have my 21, -I have been battling a very sore back, so keep my kit light- which usually adds a measure of the spectacular and dramatic...

Philber,

I enjoy taking just one lens and working with - and around - its limitations - I think it makes one a better photographer in the long run. I have not bought the 21 ZE yet because I really don't know what to do with all that angle it displays. I really like the 35 mm on a full frame perspective.

So, I have a bone to pick with a few people here on the forum. And if you pay up, all will be well. You see, I innocently browsed this forum looking for opinions, and instead what I found was amazing photos that pushed me into financial RED, and now I'm here writing to collect from a few people who made me buy a 100 makro ZE... You see, I'd sue you all, but lets be reasonable, we can settle out of court. If your name is on the list, just PM me, and I'll be happy to supply you with my paypal info for partial reimbursement.
jpeter, and samuli, you may be next on account of your wide angle samples!

I've compiled a list of all the people on this forum who owe me money.

RickPerry (your water shot almost made me give u money back, but the second rock shot put u back on the list)
snowboarder (you owe me triple the going rate, on account that I got yelled at by my fiance!)
John Black (you owe me double, and a half due to your review) (oh and I'm also coming after you on account of the 28/2)
Samuli Vahonen

And Paul Yi, don't think you're getting off.. That last shot from a moving car was pretty impressive, I'll send my accountant after you next month.

BTW, this is not some cheeky british humor. I'm American, no humor here... Pay up.

Rick, sometimes, like you, I indeed go out with just one lens. I tend to do that with a lens that I might have neglected for a while, to get re-acquainted with what it can do. Going out with just the 21 is an experience. Because, on the one hand, it is hard to take minimalist pictures with it , and also because it has so much DOF that it transforms my 5DMkII into a quasi-P&S...

Adam, I am SOOOOO glad that you don't enjoy my pictures. Please push the "hide me" button so that they are no longer inflicted on you...

I thought I wrote you into my list, the first time I must have, but the bottom part didn't get copied while I was rewriting the names, don't feel left out you were originally on the list of people who should pay me compensation.

Your 21 Distagon shot gave me quite the headache. The one with the pillars, amazing! So amazing that you can almost feel the cold rough texture of weathered stone (specifically the one with two pillars in the shot, although not limited to)... Anyway the headache was, I wanted to get a wide lens to match the makro, but the wide lens was suppose to be a 28 or a 35 (50 I want but cant afford right now, nor could I decide between the makro and non). But I know I'll need a good wide, but more of a fashion wide then a landscape wide.... So it was the 28 or the 35... Then I seen snowboarders 21 shots and was like WOW... And to drive it home seeing how much life your pillar shots have, I'm now really loving the 21.... So here's where the headache kicks in, I'm trying to figure out what to sell to buy a 35 and a 21... Honestly though, for the life of me I can't stretch my budget to accommodate both.

I guess with that said, without hijacking the OPs thread, I'd love someone to convince me why I should choose one over the other, and the contenders are 28, 35 (keep in mind I think the 21 is amazing but to wide and would make a good 3rd or 4th lens in the series)... now I know it's personal preference because they are different beasts, but keep in mind I'm I can only chose one... So GO!

BTW, I use to have the 35L, and found it to be softish wide open, although I loved the FL, I now have the 28 1.8, it's also soft wide open, but got it because after selling the 35mm I picked up a 16-35L and have a 24-70L so the 28 1.8 was really just a good light walk around lens. Oh and at the time I wanted something slightly wider then 35... But now, I'm easy on FL as they're both friendly with me.

And to contribute in productive manor, tomorrow or sometime this week I will post some shots from the 100 makro (I have to go out and shoot with it first though)...

Take care guys,
Adam

Let me give you my 2 cents, Adam. What you could do is go back to your library of pictures and see for yourself whether 28mm or 35mm accounts for the greater percentage of your shots. Both are highly regarded lenses, though the 35 more so. Also, think whether you are going towards a 3-lens pack, like 28-50-100, or a 4-lens pack, even if 21 is too wide for you: 25 (improved, to be released)-35-50-100. Also, 35 is cheaper than 28 by approx. 50% of the cost of a 50mm f:1.4...
Hope that you will take this priceless advice for payment-in-kind of the amounts you intend to claim against me, considering that you offered me a 50% discount if I testified against Samuli, Ulrik, Rick, Wayne and John...

Luckily Adam is not interested for 85ZE so I can show picture without being afraid that I'll have to pay something :-) 85ZE gives nice results, but it's extreme difficult to use due to focus shift.

Samuli - you make me miss my 85 -1.4 - nice shot.

Adam - my debt to you can be collected from all the other guys that forced me into this Zeiss lens thing in the first place! I was quite happy until I found out they even made lenses for Canon bodies (on this forum) - I thought I would just buy one - the 50 - 1.4 - that led to the next and the next ....it is like eating just one pistachio - you can't - you have to eat them all!

Samuli, wow! What is that, snow falling from the limbs above? I'm thinking about the 85....not sure how crazy the focus shift would drive me though. I love the shots I see from it.

OK, you deserve a picture. And it must be taken with the Zeiss 100MP ZE...
So just for you, a little shot taken an hour ago
