Part of the answer, I am sure, is just the size of the thing. One common reason for poor boke wide open is mechanical vignetting, which I doubt this lens has much of (although I have seen a couple of shots which indicate that there may be some exceptions to that). Another part is that they just tried harder Lots of money (high price) opens up certain doors.
I am suspecting maybe Zeiss put in a apodization element?

Ah, you would be Jim of previous 200VR fame, no?
Let's do the Cove together sometime. Old (not so old) Doug, father of the original NC Zeiss thread, is here within a few miles of us, too. We could go as a gang of three.
The ZF 135 holds a special place in my lineup, even with the Otus 55, the Coastal Optics 60 APO and the Hartblei 80 tilt shift right on the shelf next to it. (A shelf, I hasten to add, which is not in my house but downtown.) That lens is just very productive; you can get a wide range of images out of it.
What you really need to do is accompany my son and me on a return trip to Monroe County, WV. Last spring's trip there was one of the most rewarding photo trips I've done in the East.
Yep, that's me. I would love to take a trip even local with you guys. I would especially like to get some pointers on shooting with a tilt / shift. I'm re-gearing at the moment. I sold all my Nikon gear last week and making the switch over to Canon. I'm hopeful to add a 17 T/S to the line up soon and will need some help with the learning curve. I'm researching videos / articles online while I wait on my new gear. Hopefully, a new 1Dx, RRS plate, Zeiss 21 and a few other items will arrive next week then I'll be ready.
Sorry for my delay in replying it's been one of those weeks. See my posts for a better understanding.
As for the photos in this thread ... amazing as always. One of my favorite threads on FM and only a handful I will stop what I'm doing to check when notification is received. Hopefully I will re-join the ranks next week.
I am so sorry about the size but cannot really tell the detail smaller than this image. If it is too big . . . just let me know . . . I will resize it again . . .
thanks everybody for the comments and likes.

It's a beautiful image. As far as the colors, have you thought about warming the temperature of the rocks in the foreground a little with a paintbrush to help bring out the color cast from the sunrise/set?
Ronny, I like the colors as you have them. The only part that looks a little off is the shade and saturation of the blue in the sky in the upper left. Even that could just be attributed to the location or time of year. The different blue hues in the image make it very visually interesting.

Ronny...Have you tried a BW conversion of that one? I bet it would look stellar!
