Just wanted to pop in and wish everyone a Merry Christmas. I'm still hanging around and lurking for the incredible inspiration. I'll hopefully have some photos to contribute soon as I'm coming into my slow season for my "real" job.

PS. For size reference: the concrete block on top left corner is about 2 meter/6 feet wide, from sea level (average level) to top of cliffs is 20-30 meters/60-90 feet.

Samuli - I am rather fooled by the photo for the scale, and now I realized it is far larger than I first thought. So, they are rather far away for 50 5.6 to have focus on most eh ? Very cool. ( I imagine it is not a crop. )

All these shots are from the Zeiss 50mm 1.4 Nikon. I've read that this lens is not designed for close focus, but have never read how close? can anyone tell me please. (rtfm on me I just read the manual, so yeah 17" close focus.

Mataz426 - I only had Contax Planar 50 1.4, so I understand it is slightly different. ( It is a pst tense as it broke, and I will probably buy ZF version now. ) My experience with planar has been that short distance, such as 17" away, can be relatively 'weak' in its rendition, it has a bit of haze in wo especially with bright light. Close down to 4 - 5.6 makes it far better. However, bokeh of further bright lit detailed background when focused close distance, can become a bit busy, and some people do not quite like that. I actually like it very much. Also the extremely shallow DOF in short distance can make focusing rather tricky as well. From mid distance on, say 10' + it focus area increases, and image seems to improve. Other thing is that, WO in bright light, also tends to bring issues, overcast is less problematic. There is a distinctive shift at aound f5.6, when planar gets very sharp with beautiful color rendition, very yummy color. I am quite biased for this lens, as I like its strength as well as it 'weakenesss.
By the way, the last shot is quite stunning. Great light. I hate to use this word, and it is very rare I use such expression, but it is very 3D for me.

CY50 did not work with AE function of D700 unless it was wide open as it was adapted with Leitax mount. So, I never had the 'over' or 'under' exposure issue just like manual focus lens wouldn't have autofocus problem Some ZF lenses present such tendency. My copy of ZF.2 1.4/35 has a tendency to over expose at least 2/3 EV. You may be seeing the similar tendency.
