Sometime ago in p538 #1 post Samuli Vahonen wrote: The main differences from my point of view (and in order I find them causing 85P to have it's characteristics):
- 85P lower contrast in bokeh (black are not as black and colors due to that less saturate) [this is the optical character, what makes the biggest difference to me]
- 85P has less CA errors in bokeh areas very close to the plane into which user focused, or they are less visible (I have many 100MP photos ruined by having magenta cast behind subject and green cast in front of subject, mostly this is only issue on urban environment, I can't remember having ANY nature photos ruines by this, but fabrics, concrete/asphalt etc. can pick up this rather ugly)
- 85P @ f/2.8 is "as good as it get" for from bokeh point of view, while 100MP still struggles even at f/3.2 and sometimes even f/3.5 (if you shoot my stuff, e.g. mid distance forest shots the corners are constant issue - if I would shoot urban stuff this would be so easy to hide that this never would be any problem)
- 85P doesn't have practically any vignetting @ f/2.8, while 100MP vignettes more even at f/4 (concerns only mid and far distances, close-ups and macros don't vignette)
- from f/2.8 to f/8 there are no practical differences in details in the plane I have focused, at f/2 100MP beats 85P clearly, and diffraction eats less 100MP detail in f/11 (both suck as bad @ f/16) [the practical for me is A2 size prints, pixel peepers for sure find differences, but that is their problem, I could not care less pixel peeping, if I would like to get larger than A2 I anyway would shoot panorama]
- 85P focus shift, if mitigated doesn't cause any image quality issues. ...Show more →
I just want to share my findings about 100MP and 85P bokeh differences that may correspond to Samuli's experience.
If shot wide open lens gives a cat's eye shape to bokeh that is located out of the center of an image especially in corners and greater the distance the cat's eye shape is more exhibited. But (!) macro-planars seem to distort details in corners as well and they do it in the same way like if PS radial blur filter is applied.

I don't see any distortion in any of those shots, only unsharpness due to distance to focus plane, and some vignetting. What do you mean?
I don't mean optical distortion as everybody is aware of this term. Look at blurred details in the corners in #1 sample that exposes them very obviously - those blurred green leaves are radially bent (distorted).
How to deal with corner detail distortion? Is it possible to reduce the effect? Any solutions?
Johnahill's horse shots made by 100MP have radially distorted corner details too.

Ah, the mechanical vignetting? The housing is not large enough to let the light rays pass unobstructed and clips them a little at wide apertures close to the corners?

Actually I don't know how excactly it happens in engeneering terms. I just see the results and they are not very pleasant especially if the main object is not placed right in the center of frame.
Yes, I know what you mean, but some Zeiss lenses have this. Cat's eyes, I think it is also called. The blurred point near the edge takes up more room inside the lens than a sharp point would, and hits the side of the lens. At least, that is my understanding of it.
Xtobolic, user222, Lieutenant Z, HelenaN, twoeye, Lars, frezeiss, Samuli - Thank you so much for your comments
Xtobolic - I like the old man and a kid sitting in front of all boxes. Old man shows the feeling I feel when I have to clean up the apartment ! The B/W portrait is stunning.
nickson - Very nIce sky and composition. Too bad the halo around birds is a bit strong for me.
Lieutenant - I really like the window series. Especially the last two. (Well, technically they are not windows.) Great color comp, texture and detail.
HelenaN - That is a gorgeous shot. It feels like it is an IR shot. I like it.
Ulff - You are quite a master of making a cohesive set. Love the way how they tell the story as I scroll down. Surprises and humor, quite well done.
johnahill - Wow,that is a picture perfect shot ( page 546). Love that lone tree on the hill. Beautiful light on the houses. From page 547, the Dartmore series is great. I can't pick one to like. Texture of #1, 2 are great, but also the pony shots are very nice.
twoeye - Striking composition, texture, and light.
Jim - Love the lady's bug. Also the railing shot is a beautiful capture of light and shadow.
Lars - Talking about gorgeous flower, that is a great shot ( the purple one). Beautiful composition, color and focus point! Banana flower shot is also quite beautiful. Wonderful use of 100MP's gorgeous bokeh
ltruong8 - #1 is a great capture of light of that surfboard-on-top building. #2 is more settled with horiizon, but I like the #1 for its dynamism.
Ricardo - Great to see your work here again. I really like the first portrait. Great capture. Boat and hook is also quite nice. Love your use of oof on boat.
cipsaz - Interesting POV on the tulip shot. Slight slant plane sort of works on this shot.
Samuli - The first shot of the dead tree is just gorgeous. Love the light. Amazing detail from the second shot, but the third shot also has really tasty light rendition. Very hard to pick my favorite.
Greggf - I was wondering where you are. Very nice set. I really like the chair shot and the flower shot.
Edward - I really like your use of oof blue fence in foreground and lead into the cat. Really nice drama. I like film for this shot.
Nothing too special, just got my 50P in the other day and I wanted to see where its tolerances were with lens flare. Kinda liked the end result anyways
Thanks everyone for your kind words. I shot 35mm 1.4 fz.2 + nex5n.
#1 is an 3 images HDR stick (3 pictures) to have the laser beams.
#2 is 2 images Pano stick.
For Pano stick image, I always did it not too well, missing images, distortion... so the pano usually doesn't have a good composition. Like below example.
Does anybody has any experience on how to take images for pano properly ? I really appreciate your help.
Thanks Xtobolic, Lieutenant Z, johnahill, Jim & akul
Xtobolic, great portrait
johnahill, the horse shots are great
Lieutenant Z, a cool man with the tripod nice catch
Ripolini, like the first portrait
Greggf, I like the table shot
akul, like the last with the stones
Jochenb, the best wishes to you and your father
