Akul: Thanks, it's been a while since I used my Planar.
Bob: I love the Jamaican shots.
Bifurcator: The last "macro" shot is great.
Grenache: The redwood shots makes me want to go there.
Akul: Great shots in the misty weather.
Thanks, all.
Greggf, no, I have not made it back to Santa Cruz in a few weeks. I got stuck at work one weekend and in the rain another. Looking forward to going back and shooting some lighthouses along the coast.
Hi all! Was quite work to go through this thread from page ~350 but found many inspiring images while going through pages. It was great to see that some members who just started to post photos around page 300-350 have improved quite a lot in past 8-10 months, and good stuff keeps coming from "regular" posters.
Seems that I need again to buy one more lens (2/25), initial images seem good but lens availability is still non-existent, at least in Finland. For me the combination of 100mm and 25mm (C/Y) worked rather well last spring and summer, with one more stop of light and better sharpness this might be very good tool - just have to learn to shoot with wide-angle... Seems that Zeiss still has not been able to produce Z* tele lens for 180-250mm range, so that we keep waiting - for this I'm little disappointed, I was hoping that they produce decent tele-lens for 2012 shooting season.
Time to dust off the cameras, haven't shot anything outdoors since last summer. Being away from nature and camera, makes me really want to go shoot something on weekend but we still have snow on ground, which is melting so there isn't much to shoot yet. So be prepared for crappy shot of wet trees...
Only thing I have been doing with camera was to study a little bit how to make videos and specially how to record audio so it really works with the videos (same focus as with my photography = create "feeling of being there" instead watching screen). First study of video making (lenses MP50 and P50): " target="_blank" rel="nofollow">making some tea @ Vimeo. My goal is to make be able to produce enough material for 10 minute nature document during next spring&summer, let's see how it goes, quite difficult goal, have to shoot enormous amounts of video to get something usable.
Hmmm, image thread & my own stupid rules = must post some pics as well.... "View from road L704 (Austria) 1" / Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1,4/50 ZE @ f/4.5, 1/1000s, ISO 100

Best Regards, Samuli
(edit; didn't remember UBBCode in this forum doesn't allow colors, so removed "red" from T*)
I have a D800E on pre-order, and will thus be getting video in the camera soon, so I will look for a cheap but good microphone, and thinking about what else I might need, such as a new head. Anyway, starting really cheap I guess it is just camera and microphone, with my static tripod. How do you find the Røde Stereo VideoMic?
I had the chance to meet up with a fellow FMer yesterday for a photowalk and a bit of gear swapping. I think the winner of the day was the ZM 85 f/2 Sonnar. Not necessarily a perfect lens (what is?), but nonetheless, excellent when used optimally. After one day and maybe less than 100 images, I can't say I found its best, but am very happy with the results.
kururu: 1st pic from 25/2 is amazing. Very good "pop"
Bif: The first one is weirdly awesome. Red bull colors! I am sure the marketing folks @ Red Bull might actually fancy this !
Jim: Pillars of trees is very, very nice
Luka: Excellent shots. My picks are the first from each set.
Samuli: Welcome back! I had signed off around page 350 as well and resumed posting only recently as well
Brilliant opening shot. Consistent with your theme and style but I never get bored of it.
Stared at it for quite a while and took it all in.Very nicely done. Yep, created a feeling of being there for sure!
Out of curiosity, why f4.5? [DoF control? Blur disc calculation or both?] Result is very good though
LZ : First one is very nice.
Carsten: You have the 21, 50 and 100 right? Should all be great on D800E. Looking forward to the shots from this combo
(from you as well as from other D800/800e members)
Jim: I've never said nice shot for this kind of subject matter, but wow, well done !!
Chez : Wow, great colors!
Smridevan: Love the color palette in #1 and #2 but wish the blossoms were more defined. #3 is outstanding though!
Thanks all! Was a mistake to post best picture first...
Ron, that ZM2/85 seems really nice, really like how the contrast changes on that lens when it goes from focus plane to DOF. This was greatly presented in the other thread at this shot, and even at that miniature size I can see it's not two cardboard people walking, but they also have shape - at pixel level the DOF look butt ugly, but doesn't seem to be visible when watching whole image.

Contrast: Even at these distances the DOF really covers everything there is always "zone" in middle of (or thereabouts) DOF, which has better contrast. For this kind of shots with both of the planars you can emphasize the subject little by utilizing this "zone" inside DOF.
Wind: The wind was so strong that I was barely able to stand - I actually had to hold tripod since it would have fallen otherwise. It was very weird since few hundred meters from this location there was no wind at all, but I don't understand this stuff since I come from flat country (Finland)...
Was the 2nd Yosemite photo from airplane? Viewpoint seems really weird, and don't remember seeing one from this high viewpoint before. Really "hard" light you had there...

How do you find the Røde Stereo VideoMic?I have studied this quite a lot and it really depends what kind of videos you are going to shoot with. If somebody is talking or you need sounds for something specific then get shotgun mic (e.g. Røde VideoMic Pro), but if your focus is recording the location and space then stereo mic (e.g. Røde Stereo VideoMic). After doing some tests I can't recommend Røde mics unless you choose "pro" version. In DSLRs the AD-transformer is so bad quality that without the +20dB setting found on pro-versions you get too much noise.
For cheap recording kit I would recommend:
Zoom H1 recorder
"dead cat" windscreen for Zoom H1
Røde VideoMic Pro
Then use H1 to record the ambient space and use VideoMic Pro on camera to record what is directly in front of the camera. Then combine sounds in edit. I'm going to do exactly this, but instead of using H1 I will be using H1 + Røde Stereo VideoMic for ambient recording.
For other stuff I can't comment, it depends so greatly what you are going to shoot. Personally I would really like some dolly, which would be lightweight so I could carry it to nature, but there really doesn't seem to any.

Fun video. I think you need more honey though Well, I found out that I'm not actor... it was so difficult to "act" this scene, I almost poured hot water to my hand since I had to pour it with left hand. Tea was really sweet...
"View from road L704 (Austria) 2" / Carl Zeiss Planar T* 1,4/50 ZE @ f/4.5, 1/1250s(sky and mountains) and 1/500s (foreground), ISO 100 - larger
(Sorry about using the "Photoshop ND-grad method" which makes the treetops of the mountain in middle annoying dark and some other artefacts - I would have done HDR, but I forgot the name of my HDR software and didn't find it based on application icon either so had to do this in Photoshop...may have to make new version once I get back to speed in processing as well...)

No, it was from a common viewing spot in Glacier Point. Quite a drive from Yosemite valley and not accessible at all times of the year but worth the drive nevertheless.
So, I was playing around with the ZE 21/2.8 on my µ4/3 camera and wondering just how much more coverage I'd get with it mounted on a FF camera. So I visited Wikipedia and this is what came out of the research:
The blue frame is the coverage I'd be getting with a FF sensor. The inner image there is an uncropped photo taken with the GH1 µ4/3 and scaled to the specification shown at Wiki.
