Akul - THANKS for the comparison!! While there is not much difference in the last shots (100% crop) I seem to be able to pick out more detail in 1.4 version - and if I quit trying to find the differences and just look at the pictures, the 1.4 seems to have a tad more color and appeal to me. I have had each lens individually (for a few days) at different times - could not tell the difference between them but it was separated by 4 months - not a good test. (Although I remember the 2.0 was much easier/quicker to focus.) Thanks again for the side by side!!
FlyPen, Deltant - thanks. When focused at infinity at f5.6, difference in pixel peeping feels small. Light was challenging so they are not so good to begin with, but viewing the larger size photo, makes me feel I get more detail information from 1.4. Difference is there, but not as dramatic. In wider aperture, difference gets more accentuated. Especially for the medium distance subject, oof area rendered very differently. Vignette of f2 at f2 also feels stronger than that of f1.4 at 1.4
Great comparison, Akul. Thank you. In these shots, the lenses look quite similar to me. I guess my prior feeling that the f/1.4 gave a flatter feel to images was subject or shooter driven. Both appear to have quite robust depth sense/3D to them.
They also both have more similar bokeh at infinity - or at least 20 or so feet - than I had realized. It would seem that closer subjects cause them to distinguish themselves more than distant ones.
Your conclusion is the same as mine Luka. Thanks for the effort.
It's been a while since I visited diglloyd. He updated his review of the 35/1.4:
Diglloyd:
"The 35/1.4 Distagon offers outstanding contrast and color with a compelling painterly quality that in my view is unmatched by any other 35mm lens on the market. After examining hundreds of frames, my mind is firm on that point."
I also feel that at 12MP level, the difference is probably less noticeable. As both lenses are much more capable than the D700's pixel count. With 5dii or D3X with higher MP, difference may be more pronounced, or the rumored 36MP D800, would be interesting to see what that will reveal.
Jim
Yes, the bokeh with focus on close distance shows the most obvious difference. Subject in medium distance, bokeh begins to get closer, although the seemingly deeper DOF of f2 makes the overall image appear more in focus. For instance, there is no way to achieve the amount of subject separation with the f2 in the cemetery shot, even if I shot 1.4 @f2, 1.4 would still give more subject separation compare to f2.

Noodlz79,
so these ^^^ were taken with the Extender?

Hi Jim, these are without the extender, I will have to do some more testing with the extender, it seems to act like a 140mm although the aperture still says f/2.0 and has trouble hitting infinity focus, just. For macro shots I think it may be fine but how much image degradation occurs I've yet to pixel peep. Btw very nice shot^^
frezeiss, great images! where was it taken?
i haven't used the 1.4/35 that much, so i still can't say which one that i like. they're equally great so far, except for f1.4-f1.999 where 1.4/35 clearly wins
i bought the f1.4 because i often need fast aperture. for landscape i think f2.0 is more than enough.
