Phil - Wonderful series from Dubai street. I love the dhaw shot with compressed city scape behind.
alkanphel - beautifully abstract shots. Love the use of shallow dof
Skumar - Very interesting play with scale. Ferris wheel stands out nicely with B/W
Philber - gorgeous color. Interestingly, it reminds me of your shots from India with 50 planar ( I think it was ? )
all from the ZE 85. I've been trying to spend a lot of time with it, I think I'm getting the hang of its strong points.
I have several more on my flickr page and I scanned in some film as well using only the ZE 35 and 85 on the whole roll. Still need to post some of those though.
Great shots Abram.
Can you, or anyone of the other Zeiss aficionados comment on your experiences with the 85? I know that it seems the be the red headed step child of the Zeiss line up. Many seem to be indifferent about it, but from what I can tell, it's because they don't fully understand its strengths and shortcomings.
The more I read about this lens, the more intimidated I am.I know about the focus shift, and that you probably don't want to use it up close, but my intention is to use it as a short tele for street work. I love the "look" of the Zeiss lenses, but would I be better served going a different route for now(by no means to I have the photographic skill or experience of some of the members in here), or should I just jump in feet first and take my lumps as I learn how to use this tool?

I agree that the Zeiss 85 does have some quirks to it, but now that I understand it better, I have no problem using it (so far) The focus shift is very similar in behavior to the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L. I also own that lens and it's honestly one of my favorites, so far (for me) the only time the ZE 85 has a problem is when you're trying to shoot inside the MFD range and near wide open. This lens is clearly optimized for stopped down work, however I find that it can be wonderful at even f/2.
I would definitely give it a shot if the 85mm focal lengths interests you, find a used copy, and if you don't like it you can always turn around and re-sell it. Or better yet, rent it from a place like lensrentals.com for a week or so and see if it suits your shooting style.
I'm happy to have this lens again, it takes a little effort to appreciate, but it's a very capable optic in my opinion.
I was having trouble using live view since it was so dark, so I just focused on infinity and stopped down to f/5.6. Thankfully my horizon lines were relatively straight.

Dj_dunzie -nice series. Can I ask what your lighting setup was?
Joe thanks for the kind words... although I wish I could provide you something cooler than "harsh ambient light with a healthy dose of in-camera ADL (Nikon's Active D-Lighting) to boost the shadows". This was a bit of an impromptu shoot...
More amazing inspiration on these past few pages. Great work all! John, that is fantastic. Abram, really love the mood there. Akul, fantastic as always. Keep 'em coming folks!!
I am just getting to know my new Zeiss lenses. Here are two shots of the Zwinger Museum in Dresden, both shot with the 21 ZF.2 on a D700. I feel like I have a lot to learn, and welcome comments.
Every time I have my mind made up that I don't really need the 21, something like this ^^ comes along
Nice use of lines in that first one, partitura.
@dj dunzie - Thanks for the follow-up. I sort of suspected you were going to say that was just in-camera, so, as a 5D (Mki) owner, I can only watch in envy and say well-played sir, well-played.
