Uzay,
When I bought the 50MP (and 50 is my favorite focal length), I wanted to get a certain look. After a couple of weeks of trying, I didn't have a single shot which was as I wanted, more or less. The lens was sharp, quite free of aberrations, but didn't have the look I wanted. Initially I was very disappointed, and started wondering if I had made an expensive mistake.
Then I started reading more about it. I started with diglloyd, but he just went through his usual Stanford tile shooting, a rubbish bin, and whatever, and I was no wiser. Except he confirmed the good traits I had observed. Then I started reading the early days of this thread, and around page 40-60 I hit gold. A discussion between Samuli and Wayne and others observed a lot of what I was seeing. Specifically, the 50MP has a lot of DoF compared to other 50s at the same aperture. It is sharp though.
So I started trying to work around the fat DoF by finding subjects which stood alone in space, padded by a bunch of air before the next foreground/background object.
Another common comment is that the 50P gets 3D much easier than the 50MP. In fact, some were saying that the 50MP didn't do 3D. So I combined my above attempts with a search for subjects which had 3D potential, and light which modeled the subjects well. "Plastisch" is the German word for this 3D feel, however this is wrongly translated to the English "plasticity", which means something completely different.
Anyway, starting with my daughter's trike, I started hitting what I feel is the right formula for generating 3D with the 50MP. It isn't super strong, like Martin's leather chair shot, but it is there. The foreground needs to be absent, the subject must stand alone in the plane of focus, more or less, and the background needs to be removed, but not completely absent.
Anyone who has a 50MP and is interested in the experiment could follow along with their own shots. This lens clearly has 3D potential under the right circumstances. I am still not producing shots which pop right out of the screen, but I am getting closer.
The processing has to be done with great care and feel, to maximize the potential. Contrast, Vibrance, and Exposure/Brightness in Aperture 3, and sharpening in CS4 is what I have been doing.
