My second post here.
What a great Zeiss images here! In fact, I've been lurking here since ages, but I finally made an account. Maybe I can contribute to this topic by posting Zeiss photo's.
@micke.vmix, that picture is great! Mini Groot. Really nice detail!
I should have contributed more for this thread which was my favorite in here FM.
I replaced most my ZF Zeiss with ZE to get the focus direction I want. Also, it seems much easier to adapt ZE glasses on multiple platform due to wider smart adapters availability.
Here are two with 50mm Plannar with Leica SL2S. The rendering is just lovely.
It feels wrong to ask a question here without contributing, here is the milvus 18 on eos R.
Canon EOS R, Zeiss Milvus 18, 1/60 f/2.8 iso 100
Does anyone have comparative experience between the 50 zm sonnar and the ze 50 planar?
The focus assist on canon mirrorless is fantastic, getting eye AF with a manual lens. I love the 50 1.5 but it doesn't have the chip to allow focus assist. I wonder if the 50 planar renders close enough, with the addition of focus assist

I've not used any ZM models, but I'm pretty sure it is a different optical formula. Perhaps someone else can give more accurate comparison.
I am familiar with the ZE 50/1.4, and I agree that it works extremely well with the new Canon mirrorless -- so much better than the older DSLRs. My copy is spot-on accurate with the Canon R focus assist, but I usually use EVF magnification to select my focusing choice. The lens is usually prone to focus shift if focus is done wide open, but my copy seems immune. A previous copy had terrible focus shift when stopped down, not this one.
The ZE are cheap enough now that you affordably try out many of these fine lenses, getting a renewed lease on life with mirrorless technology.
My favorite ZE lenses are 25/2, 28/2 and 35/2. Posted here is one from the 35/2.
Looking forward to more images from you as you get into the ZE lenses.

They are very different. Sonnar is famous for smooth bokeh and planar 50 is famous for "funky" bokeh Most classic 50mm fast glass has "planar" formula that doesn't have "pretty bokeh" in traditional term. but the effect can be used for special look.
I personally would prefer planar a little more as it can be a very good landscape glass once stop down but can't say the same for sonnar. 50mm planar is f2.5 lens if you want good sharpness and definition. but mid distance rendering at f2.5 can look very neutral and pretty IMO, the DOF is not shallow but focus transition roll off looks good to me eye. I love the size and focus feeling. sonnar will give you smoother look at wide aperture for most user cases and it will be sharper than planar 50 though itself is not a sharp lens.
This is just personal take based on many years of usage so please take it with a grain of salt.
