Not sure if this showed up here or not but for those of you who purchased a new Nikon 70-200 VR II there appears to be an issue with some peeling as noted at nikonrumors.com. They have info on the site with some images.

Yep - saw that earlier this morning...I've got the chipping in mine which on it's own doesn't concern me. What does concern though me is this silvery particulate matter which I'm assuming came from the chipping, that's all over the inside of the lens tube.

Mine also has the "chipping" and silvery particles. The "idea" that it is no "big" deal....well try to sell a "defective" one used. For the people who own a "defective" lens, how much has Nikon screwed you out of it's potential resale value??
IMO, there is no way that releasing these lenses wasn't a corporate/management decision. There are just too many people reporting problems..theses lenses just didn't slip by QC on a late Friday afternoon.

I hadn't thought about that - but you're absolutely right - this is going back as soon as I chat with the service reps in Melville.

This issue didn't surface until after the 30 day return policy expired for my lens; so I see no reason to return it to Nikon until they address the problem and announce what they plan on doing about it. If It still was within the 30 day return "window", it would be shipping back today.

These are all under warranty. Nikon will fix them regardless of the commonality of the defects.
I hope so but as far as the "value" of the lens, Nikon needs to define what the problem is. If it is an electroplating problem, which lenses are affected or are all involved and will the flaking appear later even if it looks OK now. Since a used lens has no warranty, these and other questions have an impact on the value of the lens and how much of a potential financial hit the early adopters may have taken.
This sucks..... I just checked mine and I do see a lot of particles attached to the edge of one of the lens elements inside.
The thread also looks bad in some places; like parts of it are just ripped off or something.
I just got the lens from Adorama on 12/21/2009 but this store has only 14 days return for full refund policy and I can't return it..... I'll have to call that place, find out if they can take it back.
Amazon and B&H in this matter are much better.
At B&H at least they say that because of the holidays they extend the return day (for a full refund) to 01/18/2010.
What a PITA for Nikon and everyone who got a lens suffering from this. Hopefully it'll get sorted quickly and easily. Ah they joys of modern manufacturing.
I just bought this lens about 2 weeks ago from B&H. Could you guys tell me exactly what to look for? I like to find out if this one has problems while I can still send it back.
How refreshing, on the canon forum the thread would be 5 pages long with angry denials Tis true though that at this price, perhaps especially at this price, it can't just be ignored.
Nikon lenses have a FIVE year WARRANTY..........use it.
SHVv......There's a conspiracy behind every corner. This is a type of problem that appears after a length of time. I'm sure Nikon will take care of it. Why do you think Nikon is trying to screw you? Do companies screw you often?
