I like them, might boost saturation just a notch, might be monitor though.
I really like the first shot, specifically the boards in the background give a good impression of height, really adds to the expression. Not sure if he's looking at a ref or a scoreboard but has that 'moment of clarity' look on the face when they become one with hockey. Nice work, waiting for my 1D4 to come in and hoping to get similar results.
Love the shots, Paul! You did great. I would question the need for NR in these. Maybe it's just me, but the ones with NR don't look as good as the ones that do. Specifically, it's the texture on their faces that I noticed. The monitor I'm on right now sucks though, so it's probably me.
Paul, Great shots as always. I just gotta say one thing here. I remember not to long ago that if you mentioned "GEAR" in a topic title you were shot down for it being a gear post, at least I was. There are currently four pretty new topics that mention gear and it seems the most post replies are about the gear rather then the "sports images" themselfs. Is the Sports Forum getting a little lax? I even see some members posting about gear that have called me out on this in the past..... What Goes?

Which begs the question, how can the forum be about sports shooting and not also be about the gear with which the images were made?
It's obvious that most here are quite interested in both and the two are so intertwined it seems impractical to expect separate posts in separate forums. Maybe the forum rules should be relaxed a bit. If the images pertain to sports, then I'm nearly as interested in the gear used as in the images themselves.
Oh, and before I forget, I think Paul's images are awesome, although the orange jersey in #3 is almost flourescent on my monitor. Great work! As hockey shooter, I never get anything that sharp. I've got to get to work.
Thanks for sharing the images and for the insight on the gear used to make them.
There are a couple reasons for mentioning gear and settings in the topic of a sports corner post. First, anyone who has been here more than a week knows one of the first questions to come up when photos are posted is going to be, "what camera, lens, settings did you use to get this photo". So it is sometimes easier to get that out in the open up front to try to keep the discussion focused on the pictures.
Another reason is to attract more viewers, which will hopefully spark a discussion of the photos. I know from my own experience that adding the word "strobed" to a HS basketball topic will get you a ton more hits than just posting "HS BBall"
That being said there is a world of difference between saying "these shots were taken with a ______ and a ______ at f_ and a SS of _" and saying, “I want to take some sports shots. What do I need?". Or "Which is better for sports _____ or_____?" Those questions are gear specific questions. There are several sections devoted specifically to those discussions. I guarantee you will get answers there, probably from the same guys you see posting photos here.
It would be a lot easier for Fred to have one catch all forum with no topic guidelines but I'm glad he doesn't do it that way. I like to know specifically where to go to find what I'm looking for.
The sports corner is a presentation forum. Its sole purpose is to present and discuss sports photographs. I swear, I don't know what's so hard to understand about that.
Sorry to go off on your thread Paul. I don't want to detract from your photos but the gear issue is like a turd that won't flush. I wish we could get it cleared up and move on.
Steve and Marty,
Don't misunderstand my post... I agree 100% with what you guys are saying and I think the gear sports corner members are using is very important to mention. I have just seen some members (mostly new) flamed right from the start when mentioning gear in their post. Also I am not trying to take anything away from Pauls thread here at all. It just happened to be the last one I read. I respect Paul totally and think he is one of the most helpful and best sports guys on this board. I guess I would just like the "rules" lightened up a little for new members and not taking such a harsh, cut and dry stand on their posts.
Not much of a hockey shooter...huh? You are probably a terrible poker player too. These are pretty dang sweet from one non hockey shooter to another. That one with the blue eyes is a winner.
Great series. Orange is always a debated colour, but I think you have it done right.
I find the bench shots sell at once with other parents requesting a similar shot of their player. I find it tough to switch from the over exposed setting for action to grabbing a bench shot, then back to the ice.
Would love to have the range of this lense as I find the 70-200 too short. Of course, if Canon had one I would have a tough time affording it.
Tell us about the order system and how it performed.
