Video was somewhat of a concern but I do own a nice camcorder so i figure a camera is for pictures only. But i'm sure by the time i'm ready to upgrade, all of the cameras will have video.
Yesterday, Nikonrumors.com suggested the D700 is being phased out as we speak. But I think we'll see a D700s as the replacement....... ions before we see a D800.
Why get a D800? It will just be followed by the D900 which will be even better. I think you should wait for the D1000. Now THAT will be a camera! Of course, you will lose a few years of photo taking, but look what you will have by waiting.
Disclaimer: No little sarcazzies were injured in the writing of this post. Drained dry, but not injured.

yeah, don't wait.... the d700 is a super camera and why would you need all the extra megapixels?
I'm not the OP, but I would like the option of a higher megapixel count for a few reasons.
Printing large is cheap now - either through MPix/etc. or with your own inkjet. When I was in school, 20x30 prints or larger would have required all new trays and tools and a lot more effort than most could muster for class projects. (And god help us on the drying and spotting!) Now it's a click or two away.
12mp isn't bad for printing that 16x24 and up - but more megapixels doesn't hurt.
Cropping - I like to crop to either 2.35:1 or square on occasion. Both involve trashing a lot of pixels.
In my case, I could switch back to Canon (and my favorite lens, the 35L) without much of a hit - but I've gotten used to NIkon and its reliability in my two years with the D700.
This like a thread on "should I up grade my computer now, or wait for Apple to release..." Buy a used D700 and enjoy it until a D800 is released. You might find out that a D800 is not necessary.
There will be a D850 after the D800, so don't buy the D800 when it comes out either...then wait just a little longer for the D900 that replaces the D850 and then you won't have an old obsolete camera...but then...
Worrying about which technological generation to invest in is self-defeating and worrying about it pretty much just leaves you with no camera and a headache.
What is even funnier is how we all worry how much we are going to lose on the purchase of a camera. Is there someone actually making buying new and selling used Nikon gear? I thought this was a photography forum where we actually take pictures with our gear.
The way I see it is that I am going to lose money on every piece of gear I buy compared to the price I paid for it. If the price is too high and you know you are going to be selling it soon for the next great thing to come out, well wait for that to hit the streets. Buy it soon enough and you will forget what you paid by the time the next great body hits the streets. Well, maybe not forget, but the sting will be lighter.
I try to think that what I bought is a tool to do a job, the same as a car that gets me from point a to point b. Tomorrow's car may be better, but I'm happy with the one I've got until it is time to replace it or I have the money to throw at another camera/lens/car/etc.
Maybe I've got my head up and locked, but that's how I see it. Granted, I'm not a professional trying to make a living at this - that puts in another factor that completely changes the equation.
For the rest of us though, buy what you can afford and justify to yourself and the others in your life that matter to you. Then get out there and take some photos and enjoy it.
Of course seeing how that is a large part of what we talk about around here, if we all did as I suggested there would be little reason for forums like this!

I was about to go on the upgrade cycle thingy ( d3s/D3x), but after some refection the 700 is all I will need for a long time to come. It delivers ever time.the rest is on me.
Get the 700 and don't look back.
You can pick up a D700 on these boards for under $2k, and I'm going to say it will hold that value or something real close. Go for it, it's the best photographic tool you can buy without sinking far more money into your purchase.
