sjms -- What do you see as a problem with Camdapter's '2 part' design? Have you had one fail on you? I've never heard of or had a problem with their plates and have been using them for over four years now. If there's a problem I should be aware of, please advise.

Right now I'm using them on two bodies and they work great... no failures and they fit securely on the cameras and in my A-S clamps. I also have an Imagetooling '1 part' plate which I bought several years ago and it sits on my desk. Nothing wrong with it... I just prefer the Camdapters.

i have never owned one. i've used RRS since 1991. back then he was the only one thinking about plates and even then there was no hand grip loops i use L plates on all my bodies and stopped using hand straps going on 5 years ago and even then i only used them when i had canon and it came with the body.

why two parts? why not just machine it into the piece monolithically? interference fit pins have been known to loosen. (now it is machined in i believe) as you said you have an imagetool one that is machined in lighter in weight because it is both built in and skeletonized (hollowed out). what preference is there except for a few grams no performance difference unlike going with an L plate? you tell me.

my L plates have the loops in them but as i said serve no purpose for me.

I'd say it boils down to personal preference. I see the one piece vs two piece thing as just different designs to accomplish the same end result and both plates do this quite nicely.

I hate neck straps so use hand straps exclusively and prefer Camdapter plates on my D200 and D50. These are my throw in the car and take everywhere bodies. However, I have an RRS L plate on my D700 which sees a lot of tripod use. On the other hand, if you were to use a hand strap, of the two you'd tend to prefer the one piece Imagetooling plate. Nothing wrong with that. Just different strokes for different folks. Either plate will do the job equally well.

Imagetooling does a nice Arca-Swiss compatible adapter plate with provision for adding a hand strap to it.

I'm not sure imagetooling is still active. The owner, Jay, is/was a member here, though. I owned several of his plates, and even a few clamps, before I switched over to RRS and Kirk L-brackets and clamps. The imagetooling plates were nicely-made and feather-light, and I used mine with Camdapter hand straps.

I still have mine. I've rigged it as snap-closure affixed to a hand strap; the plate can be easily removed, disengaged from the hand strap and placed in a lens support foot when needed.

Good for you. Although not one of the two inexpensive plates we were discussing, in the end, the best choice. However, until I feel the need for L plates on all my bodies, I'll stick with Camdapter.

I know, but I sent an email earlier this year and got no response. I've got an Elan 7N coming, and I'd like a plate for it, so maybe I'll try next week.

Wow, I should check up on FM board more often.
I own imagetooling.com.

I have not written anything on the forum for the past 3 years, so as not to appear "commercial". I have been an active reader, but missed the forum in the last few days.

For Dean (dcains), I apologize. I can only find e-mail exchanges with you from 2006. I don't know what happened to your e-mail from earlier this year. I want to blame it on the overly agressive spam filter, but it's still my fault. If anyone feels that I didn't respond to your e-mail, I will provide free shipping on your order. As a matter of practice, I respond to all questions within a day or less.

I designed the plates to be better than any available ones:

- Lightest of any Arca-Swiss plates (equivalent to 7 sheets of paper)
- Aesthetic (matt black, anodized finish with aircraft quality material) & functional (non-reflective, non-slip & durable)
- Extra hand strap holes are designed to hold the hand strap away from the clamp (unique to my design)
- One of the lowest profile designs (camera stays closer to the tripod)

My 2 cents on weight saving:
- I once calculated that those who choose carbon fiber tripod over aluminum pay a premium of around $7 per ounce of weight saving. Weight saving of 1 to 2 ounce for a plate = premium of $7 to $14, for those who care...

Hi Jay:

2006 seems like a long time ago. Very glad you're still around. Which plate for an EOS Elan 7n?

Hello Dean,

P1DS will fit EOS Elan 7n. If you still have P1DS_30D, it will fit the camera as well.

Money wasted. They say:
"The Camdapter Arca Style fits Arca Swiss QR Clamps, including RRS Lever Clamps"
It doesn't fit even an arca screw clamp!

My apologies to pasph because he was sent the wrong part. In defence of Camdapter, I was contacted only yesterday about this problem by the customer. I am more than happy to make this right for the customer, however he wants to handle it.

Also, for what it's worth, reading down this post there are some incorrect statements regarding the merits of the two piece strap lug design. First, the stainless steel pin is not press fit, but secured by a setscrew (3 piece design?) which is then threadlocked in place. There are literally thousands of that design plates in service and none has ever come loose. Second, I consider the 3 part design superior to the integral strap lug. It produces virtually no wear at all on the nylon webbing, something that the integral design cannot do regardless of how well de-burred the slot is. If I could keep the size down I would use the 3 piece design on every part I make, even though it adds considerable material and labor costs to the part.

SANTA EXIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Send the wrong plate back to Camdapter was not an option (would cost me €42.55).
But now checking my email i found this:
"Your Camdapter Order was shipped to you on 12/28/2009 via U.S. Postal
Service First-Class International"

I have no words, i'm really grateful to Jim Garavuso.
First class customer service!
