That I own? 70-200mm f2.8L IS with a 1.4x
That I rented? 300mm f2.8L IS with a 1.4x
That I saw at a show? That Sigma 500mm that comes with its own LCD panel.
For Polo - a rented Canon 600 4 IS w/ 1D Mk III or 50D on a monopod with my 300 2.8 w/ on a Mk III or 50D on a bandoleer harness, and my 70-200 2.8 & 1Ds II on a neck strap. It is so nice to have the right tools for the job but the 600 was rented for the weekend and at the rate that the Polo players buy photos it would take 50+ years to pay back a purchase... The only negative was that it was a really hot day and the interference from the water vapor/heat waves negated the sharpness of the 600 at the longer distances.
Very, VERY, impressing Liquistone. You had steady air and good seeing.
Longest lens? Do you remember the magnificent Universar tele lenses? A 400 f6.3(?) was my very first. At some point when we learned optics in school, I found out that a TC became stronger if it was moved forward into the tele lens. As the Universar wasn´t much more than a pipe with very few lenses, it was easy to play with. As it happened toilet rolls fitted perfectly into the barrel in front of the TC. The focal poit moved half a meter, 1.5 ft, back, so the correct amount of rolls were added. Add a Canon AT-1. With this combo I manage to see an electrical outlet, perhaps 8 inch high, some 150m, 170 yds, away. This was thru tripple glazing in bright sun shine. The view was very dark and mushy, and shaking like nuts. IQ none, but fun. I calculated the FL to about 40000mm. Oh, those days of inspired blossoming youth...!
