Thanks greeneggs. I'm actually torn- do you think I should clone out that jet streak that starts right at Half Dome, or just leave it? I haven't gotten up the nerve yet to try and clone it out... wonder what everyone else's opinion is. Thanks!

Shane-
That was at Glacier Point in Yosemite. About 11pm. Had to wait for the moon to set a bit. Then, you focus on a star, manually. It's pitch dark so you really can't see anything in front of you. Manfrotto tripod with an Arca Swiss B1 ball head.

Leave it. It doesn't hurt the photo; it helps connect the sky and ground. And since it isn't a light trail, it doesn't really interfere with the stars. Finally, that's just what it is like out there, a beautiful sky but still with occasional planes. For better or worse, that's what Yosemite is like. This image reminds me of being out there and looking up at the sky, and I really like it.

Very nice capture, Rick, and I like the galaxy in the center as well. It's one thing to get images of stars, but to include a galaxy just adds another level to the image.
This was shot with my old D100 just as the sun went down (so that it was still lighting up the high cirrus clouds), but late enough to catch the city lights. Here's some more info:

Manual mode helps where you can control everything. I tend to shoot as low iso as I can, a tad underexposed and work with the fill lighting, WB and curves from there
