p.5 #1 · Your Best Nightscapes and how they were made

Thanks greeneggs. I'm actually torn- do you think I should clone out that jet streak that starts right at Half Dome, or just leave it? I haven't gotten up the nerve yet to try and clone it out... wonder what everyone else's opinion is. Thanks!

Hey Rick its about time, where was that taken?

About the Jet stream I am torn, I wonder what it would look like without it.

Shane-
That was at Glacier Point in Yosemite. About 11pm. Had to wait for the moon to set a bit. Then, you focus on a star, manually. It's pitch dark so you really can't see anything in front of you. Manfrotto tripod with an Arca Swiss B1 ball head.

Leave it. It doesn't hurt the photo; it helps connect the sky and ground. And since it isn't a light trail, it doesn't really interfere with the stars. Finally, that's just what it is like out there, a beautiful sky but still with occasional planes. For better or worse, that's what Yosemite is like. This image reminds me of being out there and looking up at the sky, and I really like it.

I agree, leave it. I think it adds to the photo. Great shot.

Very nice capture, Rick, and I like the galaxy in the center as well. It's one thing to get images of stars, but to include a galaxy just adds another level to the image.

This is an old one, but still (I think) my favorite night shot:

http://www.pbase.com/manzico/image/51084123/original.jpg

This was shot with my old D100 just as the sun went down (so that it was still lighting up the high cirrus clouds), but late enough to catch the city lights. Here's some more info:

Nikon D100
Focal Length: 12mm
Exposure: 30sec at f/4
ISO: 200

There was some post processing in PS (mostly curves).

alichty: Hoodoo city still sleeping under the stars.

mike reid: Your night images seem so balanced in their lighting. Would appreciate any tips for such exposures.

MCooper: Starry night but I suppose moonlight must've illuminated this waterway. I like the tonality and overall balance.

Manual mode helps where you can control everything. I tend to shoot as low iso as I can, a tad underexposed and work with the fill lighting, WB and curves from there

This bit I can recall.

EOS 5D
CZO Distagon 2.8/25 MM C/Y mount + Fotodiox adapter.
TC-80N3 timer release.
Obligatory tripod.
25 seconds exposure time.
50 ASA.
Manual mode.
Top and RH side crop in PS.

The rest is a bit hazy as I never take notes.

Aperture somewhere between f11 and f16.
Cokin 3 stop ND.
Cokin Mauve 2 filter.

Eilean Donan Castle.
