No, I had a narrow range of focusing ability, but it did autofocus and lock on, it only focused out to about 6" max, and within about 1" minimum.
Cool! I think my lens only had two groups, so when I took out one group, there was only one left. Therefore, it could not focus without me actually moving the camera. The element that you took out must not have been the focusing element (the 17-40 has IF, right?). The anatomy of lenses is very interesting.

what about dissecting a 50mm f/1.2 L?
man those snowflakes are neat...
Thanks. They are actually hoarfrost crystals. They form and fall on cold clear nights.
I can't say whether you could disassemble your 50mm f/1.2L. In this thread, people have done 18-55mm (which didn't work) and a 17-40mm f/4L which did work. If you value your lens a lot, I wouldn't try it. If you don't care about your lens that much, do it, but do it carefully. My lens (Canon 35-80mm) was very simple, but I haven't tried it on any other lens.

Dpic_arctic, which body did you use for those ruler shots? Looks like you own both a 1.6x and 1.3x body. Depending on which body you used for those ruler shots, we can do some quick math and figure out how much magnification you're getting out of this lens.
Love the ice crystal shots by the way!! If you wanna post the shots bigger and sans-watermark, make some JPEGs about 700px wide or so and then upload them to a site like imageshack and then post them here the same way you've been posting the Dreamstime images.

There was a thread about this in 2005, by Bellyface, IIRC, and I just happened to have the lens, so I gave it a go. I was very pleased with the results, and still have the lens.
The image quality is surprising, and the magnification is as well. The biggest issue is depth of field, but it is surprisingly easy to work with, considering the magnification. An excellent option for those that want to dabble in macro without throwing much money at it.
Nothing great here, just a few samples I have from 2005 to add to the thread...
This one was at 35mm, the rest are at 80mm. NOTE: all four are the full image, no cropping, the coins are quarters...

You guessed it, Ariel. 40D. No, I don't have a 1.3x body. The lens can still zoom to adjust the magnification. The ruler shots were taken at (35mm x 1.6)=56mm and (80mm x 1.6)=128mm. I think I posted the FLs beside the images.
Thanks for the recommendation. Is imageshack free? What is the upload limit? I haven't seriously looked at ways to upload images and display them on FM. I would like to have a way to upload bigger pics.

But don't you need to get a yahoo e-mail account?
just use http://imgur.com you don't need to sign up for anything. just browse for the photo(s) on your computer, they get uploaded for free, and links are provided for you to copy/paste here on the forum.
for example i just uploaded this using imgur in 5 seconds:

Thanks for posting this... dug out an old 35-80 that I haven't touched in at least 5 or so years. My 3 screws were actually on the side of the barrel so its simple to take apart/reassemble in a few seconds. Definitely something fun to play around with. Threw the lens and small screwdriver in my bag for when I am bored.

Lucky you! As you probably saw, I had to take off the ring on the front of the lens. Your lens must have been an older version. With a tripod and a small aperture (f/22-32) and careful focusing, it can do amazing things.

Yeah, I was happy to see how easy mine was to take apart. I remember getting it when in high school. It's probably around 13-14 years old... and all plastic baby! Looks awesome on the front of the 1D MkIII. haha
Its almost sad how much fun that lens was for me to play with yesterday.

Yes, it's a funny looking contraption. How much time did you play with it? The first time I took it apart, I blew at least a few hours. But it was worth it.
