You should be, the debate will continue. But a common opinion here at FM is that while the newer ZF/ZE versions may have improved corners and other measurable optic qualities, the older Contax version give more organic colors and subject isolation, presence/3D or whatever you want to call it. Some of us like the images better from the old.
I take no part in this debate, I just find that I like the Contax versions better and find the corresponding later ZE/ZF version more clinical, less interesting. But very competent compared to other brands options no doubt.
Even within the Contax versions, AEG/AEJ then MMG/MMJ there are sometimes slight changes, sometimes not. And rarely publicized. There are many sources on the net but in case youre into the old ones I recommend this reading (which is acutally about film-REDusers): http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?92044-Contax-Zeiss-Survival-Guide

I am confused by the C/Y Distagon vs Zeiss Distagon (Canon/Nikon mount). Is there a difference; one better than the other in some way?
If you were to rent a couple of ZE/ZF lenses, it would give you a baseline of what to expect from C/Y vs ZE/ZF. At least if you own a Canon or Nikon camera, the ZE/ZF/Milvus series mount directly to the camera without any adaptation.
I'm interested in seeing what a Milvus 35/1.4 might be like, if Zeiss produces one.
