p.2 #1 · 5D Mark I or D300?

Ask on the Canon forum and even if you were asking D300 vs XT they are gonna tell you the Canon is superior. lol. Ask on the Nikon forums, they will tell you the Nikon. End of the day is this...

Crop cameras are great for sports and wildlife. Full frame for landscape and portrait work. Either one will produce stunning results if you know your gear. Equal photographers behind the lenses you'd be hard pressed to be able to tell what images came from what cameras with most modern DSLR's. You'd have to be pixel peeping and being very critical. So your best bet is buy what feels best in your hands, and then learn how to use it.

Since you're asking, I'm going to assume you're a little green, is that true? I don't mean that as a negative to you at all, but I think it's important to know before recommending a camera. I'm also going to assume you don't have an investment in lenses.

My opinions:

5D cons - You're going to hate the frequency of sensor cleanings. Once you get over that initial irritant, and become efficient at cleaning, it's no big deal. Still, it's a deal breaker for some. This camera is a bit behind in modern features, some of which the D300 has. The AF

very well written post. do consider these points.

If AF is your concern, stay away from 5d. For every in focus shot, there will be many out of focus shots unless you shoot at f5.6. However, IQ of 5d will definitely be superior though it will require full-frame lenses which are expensive and heavy.

Think what you want. There is so much fanboy BS posted in the Canon forums, and in the Nikon forums, its ridiculous. People trying to justify their product is superior because of their insecurities about their photog. Everything I said in my post is correct short of that one exaggeration... and I bet ya someone on here would try to argue the old Canons are superior to the new Nikons. Heck, I know 2 people not on the forums that would.

want proof... post an "N vs C what should I get" topic in both forums... I promise you will get a more balanced thread in the Nikon forums where they give pros and cons and tell you to go play with them (yes it will be pro Nikon, I am not saying it won't be) than you will in the Canon forums.

Absolutely right. You can't go wrong with a Canon or Nikon. Your decision is not Canon or Nikon but whether a FF or a cropped sensor suits you better. As others have said, for portraits, studio, landscape and other wide-angle applications FF is the way to go. For sports and wildlife where you need the extra reach (so you don't have to invest in longer lenses) APS-C is the recommended format. It's that simple. Of course, if live view, sensor cleaning, and all the nice new features are important to you, then a later model DSLR is your best bet. You have to decide if features or higher IQ is more important to you. Can be a tough call!

If you have determined it will be either the 5D or D300. I would choose the D300 if you wanted an great 'all around' performer. However, if you are going to be primarily shooting landscapes and portraits then the 5D would be a better pick.
