Explain to them your style, what you do, and how you shoot; tie it in to the engagement session, as well as how it will to their wedding. Bring up your concerns about being the proper person for their job, and that you want to be 100% sure for both them and you that they pick someone right for what they expect that day.
The couple I mentioned had nothing besides a complex. I can understand if they were 30-40 and overtly successful, but they weren't. I can deal with "tough" clients. I can deal with people expecting professionalism. I don't want to deal with bullshit, because frankly, that's what I was shown in that situation. Tough clients make you a stronger person, shitty clients make you a push over.
My highest booking couple ever (haven't shot the wedding yet, won't mention $$$) really cared about "art" and was stoked with the eshoot. It all depends on how you market yourself and go about dealing with situations. I'd rather be somewhat selective now and book better weddings because of it.
Interesting... I'm going through something similar with a senior. I’m considering another session for free to make sure she is happy. I shot mostly wide and really thought it was some of my best work to date.
She asked me to crop tighter... I reluctantly did and re-proofed them to her. She wrote me again asking to go even tighter... I don't think that I'll have enough data left for enlargements. It hurts because I really like the results of the session... she wants close-ups of her face. It's my fault, I should have figured out what she wanted prior to the shoot... maybe you should have, too? Then again, if they don’t fit, they don’t fit…
its seems like you're going to have more problems at the wedding, if you cannot legally fire them, make them dislike you (eg. tell them no way I'll do another portait for less than 1000$) and refer them to another photograhper,

if this is a $14000 wedding....and they still really wanted you..then I would give them a little more of my time...i mean, really, i would expect someone to be bending over backwords for me if i were paying them $14000.
What I can't figure out is that if this guy has enough business sense to get where he's at, why he doesn't have enough business sense to handle this rather benign client situation. Its really not that tough.

hmmmm, it's kind of like "how to get experience without a job vs. how to get a job without experience"
I think it's more than a simple business question. Many of us have had nothing but fairly easy client relationships - they expect little or expect what we provide. I haven't had an experience like this, but I would be hard pressed to determine what to do because on the one hand you want happy clients and it makes you sick to think someone isn't satisfied, on the other hand you are trying to determine if it's a mismatch in style or if they are going to be really difficult clients.

A guy who seems to regularly fetch 5 figures per contracted wedding isn't business savvy enough to know how to handle an unhappy client? Good gracious what did we ever do before Fred Miranda? I can't imagine not being able to hop on here to ask for advice every time I hit a bump in the road. I still say this is trivial.
Personally, I think this thread is a thinly veiled attempt by the OP to boast a little bit. Threaten to dump a client paying $14k (even though they still want you) because they're not happy with a session? Fat fuking chance of that. 99.99% of the photographers in the world would bend over backwards for these people and he's claiming to threaten to cut them off over something this trivial? Yeah, this guy is a real bad ass.
A bad ass that I'll bet dollars to donuts knows *exactly* how he is going to handle this situation without logging on to FM all sweaty palmed to ask for advice. As if anything we say in this thread is going to change what he would have done anyway.

I agree, also when you charge that much you should expect that type of picky clientele
