p.2 #1 · Lighting bag recommendation

I was looking for a used golf bag hard cover when I found my TuffPak from NalPak. I learned of those from Chase Jarvis some time ago when he did a video on how he packs for a shoot. I saw one when a CBS Videographer was at an event I was at and asked him some question on it and it had literally been around the world several times and was in perfect working order after a few decades of use. The TuffPak opens on the top end and you pull you stuff out instead of hinging down the sides in a clamshell configuration. I got mine off of eBay but I had been looking seriously for a year or more and missed a couple that were priced well. I think to start off with the Photoflex bag will work for you when you get some C stands that might change.

Which Tuffpak did you end up using w/ your C stands? The medium length one?

Someone (I think RDkirk) on POTN mentioned these cases.

I believe that it is a 12" wide mode that is close to 4' long. I don't have it here at the minute or I would put a tape measure to it. I like it as I have a ton of stuff in it and I gave around $200 for it used off eBay. It can be used as a shipping case so shipping it isn't a problem. It meets the ATA requirements so you can check it at the airline gate. It doesn't have a lock. Between it and my Pelican 1660 I can get my gear safely anywhere in secure cases.

, I won that auction for the bag on ebay in the post by supergimp. It's pretty cool. Alot bigger than it looks in the photo. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm sure I could easily get 3 AB's if not 4 in is along with cords etc....

sometimes you get lucky ; )

Drop the guy at OEChina a message via ebay if you're interested. I've asked him about stuff before and he's made it happen....maybe he's got more and just isn't posting them on ebay. He's been really responsive with the stuff I've asked him in the past.

I emailed him as soon as I realized I missed the auction (I've bought stuff from him before) and he said that was it on that item.

I am very pleased with the construction of the case. The dividers have a hard plastic inside with padding so they are pretty sturdy. The case is also reinforced on all sides with some hard plastic. I wouldn't be comfortable having this thrown in the cargo hold of a plane, but that's not what I bought it for. My intended use is transport via car and organized storage at home.

I'm thinking a could fit a couple of speed rings in the case too. Maybe if put something like knit beanies around the speed rings I could get them safely positioned. I'll see what I can come up with.

The 10' light stands are a perfect fit. There no way 13' light stands could fit in this case.

The only negative so far is that Photoflex's site says the case comes with 6 dividers. Even if you count the long one, my case only came with 5. I'm only using 3 of the short ones at the moment but I'm still going to call Photoflex and ask what's up.

Can you lift that into the car still fully loaded?
And is that the short one?
Looks pretty well built but it'd be nice to have a few more dividers.

Yes, thanks to the handles on both ends, it's no problem lifting it into the trunk of the car. As loaded above, the whole thing weighs 43 lbs.

Yes, that's the short one (Single Kit Case).

Mine came with one more divider that I'm not using. It was supposed to come with a total of 6 dividers. I'm calling Photoflex this morning.

wow that's a nice bag and awesome review Mark, thanks for posting

One question, how well does the bag role on the wheels? If you were to take the bag with you fully loaded to an airport do you think you can haul it over the wheels instead of carrying it on a cart?

The wheels are fantastic. They roll along silky smooth! But due to the design (pull handle mounted to the middle of the top end), you are still holding up quite a bit of weight as you pull it behind you. If the handle was positioned lower, a bit more of the weight would be shifted to the wheels.

Today I found some black knit beanies in Target for $2.99 each. They fit perfectly around my speed rings to protect whatever I might be packing them with. But I also discovered they fit beautifully around my Elinchrom reflectors (both 8.25" 50º and the 6.25" 90º). The knit beanies allow me to nest the reflectors for transport without worry of damaging the finish. The thickness of beanie material makes the stack a bit taller, but not by much. So, I went back to Target and got four more.

I guess two of those bags or one single and one dual would transport a full studio

If you wanted to carry tall light stands (13'), you'd definitely need a Dual Kit Case.

Is there some type of brand and/or model on the case?
I would really like one of those, its exactly what i need.

EDIT: I apologies it says it in the auction.

I've searched high and low for that bag elsewhere. If you search the model you will find some other branded bags that are similar, but more expensive and without all the exterior pockets (B&H or Adorama - can't remember which - has an Impact branded HDC-999 but it is not exactly the same).

Let us know if you find anything.
