So I have experienced. It is slower - no doubt about it. And it hunts. But oh my - razor sharp and the color and contrast are IMHO almost as good as the 24-70L. It weighs a LOT less and is a fraction of the price. I have used it successfully at weddings but I have had a couple of occasions where worrying about focus made me wish for the 24-70 - I hate worrying at weddings!
except the worry anything else went wrong ? do you have pictures please ?
If you want to buy the Tamron go ahead - it seems like you've made up your mind already anyway - but don't base your decision on a rumor about a replacment for the 24-70, there's ZERO evidence that it will happen.
i have the 24-70L, and have used the tammy (rented). i went with the 24-70L (and will keep it), but really would have been just as happy with the output of the tamron. i suppose i just like to use OEM stuff if at all possible.

It's not that the output of the tamron is bad at all. It's an excellent little lens. On a crop though, you may find that 28mm is a little too long for your indoors wide angle stuff. I got by just fine with 24mm on a crop, but that was pushing it sometimes.
The Tamron is a sharp lens throughout the range wide-open, and especially stopped down.
The alternatives to the Canon 24-70 are the 24/1.4 and 50/1.4. Those two lenses are all that's needed for many a wedding.
IS? Uh, seriously? Have you tried freezing people dancing, moving, talking, etc. at 1/20 or 1/10? Ain't gonna happen with IS, or without. Learn to handhold, forget IS for weddings.
I've never tried the Tamron or Simga so I can't comment, but all I can say is that any non-Canon lens I own is less accurate and slower in AF than the Canon version (although all my Canon lenses are L-series.)
