On the 50D? 17-55IS. You don't need an L lens to get L results.
Agreed - the EF-S 17-55 is razor sharp, can shoot in low light & it's fast. The only drawback is if you plan at some point to move into FF bodies. It is designed for cropped sensors, and it's not a cheap lens. Sure is awesome, though.
I agree 100%. Now that I have the 7D, it becomes even more versatile. Along with the Canon EF 28-300 IS L I cover 95% of my interests. For wide angle, I have the Sigma 17-40.
Actually, I usually create photo montages for wide coverage.

The 24-105L would probably be your best choice.
I've had the 24-105, 24-70 and 17-55. The winner on a crop beyond a shadow of a doubt was the 17-55. IS, 2.8 and wide enough for general purposes. Don't let the non-L designation scare you off.
Well to date the following is what i have to go on
24-70 has 13votes
24-105 has 8 votes
17-40 has 10 votes
85 with either the tam,17-50 or the 17-40 has 9 votes
17-55 has 6 votes.
So occuring to the general feeling I should go for either the 24-70 (the favorite) or the 85 with either the tam 17-50 or the 17-40<---the 17-40 is the fav.
Thanks for all your imput, any other comments are welcome.

Voting is limited by your thread title. Replace it with 'What is the best standard zoom for my 50D?' and I'm sure the results would differ significantly.
I currently have a 24-70 (selling). It was my first lens. If you're taking pics indoors, make sure to have a flash. I also invested in the 135. I can't imagine it doing everything that you require. 24-70 or 24-105, best all around lenses - but 24-105 is more challenged in low lighting I would think.
