I bought the 7D for the low-light AF and the high ISO performance. I don't even know how to use the video, and I'm in no rush. So don't let that deter you.
If your upgrade choices are either 7D (body only) or 50D plus glass, I think I'd go with the 50D (assuming your profile of 50mm and 28-135 is still accurate). Do you find the lenses you have now limiting? Wish for something longer, or maybe wider?
Heck, you would probably be better off with a used 40D and expand your lens arsenal. Still would be a nice upgrade.
Based on what I shoot, the biggest advantage of the 7D over the xxD will be in low-light fast action, but right now, you don't have the lenses for that anyway.
Someone posted a photo of a waterfall in Watkins Glen in upstate NY on the Landscape forum, taken with a 7D. It was amazingly crisp and the details were stunning. I've taken photos at the exact same place with my 30D, on tripod, with remote release, etc ... and the 7D photo was worlds apart.

I doubt you could tell a difference in those circumstances, its the photographer not the camera remember
Probably .. but the details on the rocks and the water itself was what I was referring to. The 7D one at least to my eyes, looked much more detailed. This is the one I took .. actually it was my old D60. I know the other guy is a much better photographer than I am .. I checked his smugmug gallery and he has a lot of really really good photos. In addition, I think the increased resolution of the 7D is apparent in his Watkins Glen photos.

I just upgraded from XTi to 7d myself. I also have a limited set of glass.
I bought the 7d instead of fast lens because:
- I ruined a lot of shots with bad focus in low light. even with 430ex's AF-assist.
- no matter how fast the lens is, my kids are faster I will try to catch them with 2 flashes.
- if all else fails, I'll just switch to video and hide my lack of talent kids are cuter when they talk.

You really shouldn't paid attention to whining pixel peepin' photogeeks on gear forums. They're gear haters and nothing is right or good enough. They're just hens clucking and breaking wind. Both cameras are excellent and you can't go wrong with either one. Of course, if you have the spare benjamins, the 7D is a notch up.
OMG...that had me rolling on the floor..its so true FM is getting to be more like DPR every time a chart, graph, ect is posted instead of PICTURES that are not a 100 percent crop of someones nose...
I read the reviews and specs on both the 50D and the 7D and didn't want to pay for the 7D so I hunted down a brand new 40D instead of the 50D.
The money I saved is going towards a replacement for my ageing 24-85mm 3.5-4.5 USM.
Overall, a slightly older, lower MP camera plus good glass is better than a 50D and my old 24-85mm boat anchor.
And either choice has to be better than my ye olde 300d!

To the folks who own the 7D ... does your current computer handle the 25MB 7D RAWs fine or did you have to buy additional RAM, etc? Thanks.
I have 8gig mem.. handles 7d files fine.
but my 5DII files load up much slower.. especially in zoombrowser, it takes forever to see all the thumbnails..
The enormous RAW files of the 7D are forcing some changes in my workflow. To begin with I am chimping and deleting a lot more than ever before. And I am experimenting with shooting small JPGs along with the RAWs to use as a preview to cull down to a more reasonable number before a serious look to find the top keepers. And I'm trying a few different programs for the first run through. Other than the 18Mp sensor I like everything about the 7D so far. It seems to focus as well as a 1D series body and shoots better at high-ISO than anything I have had before it. I just wish Canon had put a 12 Mp sensor in it.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to decide on the 7D. Been selling off some stuff to try to get it (spare computer parts, etc) hopefully I can get it soon.
I'm pretty happy with my current glass selection. It may not be L quality, but I have 50mm f1.8, 100mm f2.8 macro, 25mm lens extender, 28-135mm, and sigma 10-20. Which for me, is plenty good for now, though I may want a super-zoom lens in the future.
I went from the Xti to the 50D I bought off the FM buy and sell forum. I also bought a couple L lenses...couldn't be happier. The 50D is a big step up from the XTi.
A lot of people mention getting the 7D for improved low light autofocus, but if this is a major reason for getting the 7D you would probably be better off getting the 50D and some fast glass. F1.4 is going to help a 50D focus much better than F4.5 on a 7D when it comes to low light.
k clayton has a great point of getting a 40D with glass. If I didn't' have a selection of fast 'L' lenses I would have waited on the 7D and bought some lenses first for my 50D.
However, the 50D added the micro adjust which the 40D doesn't have, and this feature is amazing if you have any lenses which are a little bit off. A couple hours testing, and all my lenses are perfect now (on my bodies, anyway).
