I like the framing of the shot. I'm curious as to what it was staring at. I think in post processing you can push the sharpening a bit more. You can also use the lasso tool in photoshop to select the eye and use unsharp mask 50% to make it pop more.
Hi Rob, I love woodpeckers, occasionally one in the backyard. How cool to get a shot that close! Looks nicely exposed. Too bad the background wasn't a different one, like gree or trees. The rusty color kind of clases with the red crown. But thats not your fault! Looks great.
I just saw your second one, Rob, the green background made a huge difference!
For the Hairy and the downy the male have a red nape and the females don’t.

I knew about the downy...saw 1 this summer in Seattle for the 1st time but the shot I took is so-so I'm affraid to post it here...not up to FM standards!
