That's a good rate, but what do you pay for a monthly fee? I hardly do any cards, so paying a monthly rate does not work for me at this point and time, but I will keep that in mind as I'm a PPA member too.

I'm waiting for Square. In the meantime, I use PayPal. But I don't receive many CC payments because I only provide it when they specifically ask.

There's a $5 monthly administration fee. And I misspoke earlier. Qualifed swiped transactions are $1.55 + .20. There are no application/reprogramming fees, no monthly minimums, free standard supplies, and discounted equipment pricing. It's through MTG, which is an entity of JP Morgan Chase Bank. I'm not sure what the equipment pricing is, as I haven't had time to call them for a quote.

If you can prove over time that you run higher amounts in transactions sometimes you can get a break on your CC rates. I recently switched from processing through my local bank (check yours out by the way!) to using Midwest Transaction Group. When I told the account exec how much I typically ran through in a week/month/year he was shocked and apparently through all of the photographers they service they aren't used to seeing 4-figure transactions. I was kind of shocked at that, but because of our higher rates of transactions we were able to get a really good deal. I'd encourage everyone that is thinking about taking credit cards ( who are we kidding, don't think just do it ) to price accordingly and run as much as you can through it. Oh yeah, and raise your prices and run more higher- level transactions .

Question: when I set up a business account way back when, I seem to remember the guy at BoA offering to sell me a portable credit card swiper. Does anyone know of anything like this? Can it be used remotely for web transactions?

I've just started using my smartphone to take credit cards. I don't get the swiped rate, but my merchant's rate is very reasonable, and like TR, I was able to negotiate a lower rate because I have larger purchases.
