I can't get the grid to work on mine nor will the mode of silent shooting change. In mode 2 it is supposed to shoot one time unless you release the shutter but mine shoots even multiple times.

Anyone else have this problem?

D300s versus 7D Price War for the Holidays of 2009.

In the meantime I haven't bought a new Dslr at full launch price since 2005. I've saved hundreds waiting, & more than thousand dollars a couple times waiting for both my brand new 5D Classic purchases. Once I had a Dslr inhand I no longer needed to be in first wave of dslr buyers.

Unless you've got a paying gig that requires the frame rate of 7D or video options waiting a couple months can save you some money as we approach Canon's favorite sales

I hope you are right but I'm not so sure about it. In autumn it seems canon will be increasing prices and I think the 7D will be a good seller and will not need to reduce its price to be sold.
So aI think just remaining there should be quite nice.
I'm speaking just for the next weeks and months... probably in the next spring it will be chaper.... but I do not think in the next weeks.
my opinion obviously.

Does anybody has a RRS or Kirk L-plate for 20D/30D/40D/50D without grip? If so, does it match the 7D?

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

I subscribe to the "optimal" use paradigm. At this price point, for those of us who wish to find a camera which works well in 100% of all possible circumstances and shooting conditions, good luck! Having said that, I think we all wish for the best possible camera for the money that we shell out. Photography taken seriously is not an inexpensive hobby, avocation, or real job. I have a 7D on pre-order from Best Buy, and it will be a couple of more weeks before I get mine (I have to admit, the wait is killing me). So, I've been living the last few weeks vicariously through others shooting with their early copies. It's kept me going, while I wait.

Now, back to "optimal use." I recently purchased a used 1Ds. It will probably arrive early next week. It's not a "perfect camera," but here is how I evaluated it:

Pros
Pro build quality
Pro weather sealing
Pro AF performance
Full-frame sensor
Film-like noise/grain
Great low ISO performance (< 400)
DEP function (last Canon to have this)
Makes gorgeous prints up to Super A3 (and probably larger)

Cons
Heavy
Large batteries
Sensor collects dust easily
Poor high ISO performance (> 400)

Targeted Uses
landscapes
portraits
macros
studio work

Miscellany
First DSLR to completely surpass 35mm film quality (2003)
First DSLR to approach medium-format film quality (2003)
First DSLR successfully marketed with a full-frame image sensor (2003)
An iconic and history-making camera for these reasons alone. A "collectable" camera which is still very usable for specific types of photography.

Take a look at the last part of the last sentence. Cameras are tools. As long as we shoot within their known limitations, we should be quite happy and get great results. I think we're all trying to determine the limitations and boundaries of where the 7D fits. I'll mostly use it for action, sports, motorsports, wildlife, and general photography in good light. I may dabble a little bit in astrophotography with it, as I did with my 20D. The 1080p HD video is a bonus to all still shooters. I'm not buying the camera for that, but it's a welcome feature. The AF performance is probably the single most important camera attribute that interests me with the 7D. So far, it seems to be far better than its xxD predecessors. The high ISO "pattern noise," which seemed to affect the 50D and is difficult to clean-up in post-processing, has been largely eliminated.

I've been told the noise on the 1Ds is much more natural-looking and film-like than any other DSLR (perhaps due to the large pixels and their pitch). So, for me, I don't care that it only shoots 3 fps (I will have the 7D for high throughput action shots). I bought the used 1Ds for one major reason: landscapes. My photography with this camera will be very deliberate, slow, calculated, and precise. I will use a tripod often, and will try to get the best light. I will "make" photographs instead of taking them.

I will use my 1Ds and my 7D cameras optimally, where they work best...

I have had error 01 twice on the first day. I have not had it again yet but have not used the camera much either. hopefully I don't see it again as I do not want to take it back.

Believe it or not, this may actually be a very good thing. It's also not out of the ordinary with an early release.

It will allow Canon to create the first firmware patch soon, which in turn will allow Trammell Hudson to port his "Magic Lantern" software from the 5Dmk2 to the 7D sooner, rather than later. Without the first firmware patch directly from Canon, Tramm has no firmware model to work from for the 7D. Magic Lantern rocks!

For those of us who understand the open source software model, and who know who Trammell Hudson is (and what he has done for the 5Dmk2), this will make sense.

Do I believe any minor issues will affect sales? Hardly. I'm not cancelling my pre-order.

If you follow the forums here and at MOST of the VIDEO forums around the world, this camera is rolling off the shelves as quickly as Canon can ship them.

I truly hope someone's paying you for your ongoing stream of negative comments.

I find it really sad to think that anyone is unhappy enough to go through life with so much anger.

Take a look at his posts. He is bragging with his D3X and D700, but most of his posts are on Canon gear forum. Lame.

Usually you have gradually increasing lightloss in the viewfinder from F/4 and downwards... A viewfinder will not give you shallower depth of field than roughly F/2.8 unless you make the viewfinder VERY dark by making the matte screen VERY matte.

I'd rather say that DoF in the viewfinder depends on the fineness of the matte screen. In other words we can talk about the matte screen having a resolution. A finer matte screen resolves more details and as long as this resolution is lower than the resolution of your retina, you'll see the difference. Since DoF depends on the resolution (remember, DoF is about circles of confusion), a higher resolution (of the matte screen) means a shallower DoF.

Incidently, it appears that with current technologies of matte screen manufacturing, the finer the matte, the less light it transmits.

Most of the time you cannot see any light decrease at all, or at least VERY little if you hit "DoF-preview" on the camera - stopping down a F/1.4 lens to F/2.

I think the lack of perception of light decrease has more to do with the adaptation of the eye pupil to the amount of incoming light.

Almost none of this light is transmitted to the viewfinder clear aperture. Stopping down to F/2.8 from F/1.4 usually gives you about half a stop of light loss in the viewfinder when it "should" be two whole stops.

I guess if you measured the amount of transmitted light from the matte screen (maybe with a lightmeter), you would see the expected decrease of 2 stops.

And as Dof is linearly dependent on light amount, there's a "minimum" DoF in the viewfinder...

Disagree on that. DoF (measured in length units) depends on lens focal length, focus plane distance, aperture and sensor/screen resolution, not on light amount in any way (putting an ND filter in front of the lens doesn't change the DoF).

Anyone more technically inclined can see it as if the two apertures (lens aperture and viewfinder aperture) does not transmit all light to each other.

I think that the viewfinder aperture, if we ever can speak of such a thing, is unrelevant here.

The exact surface diffusion on the matte screen determines how much of the light that's passed through the entire system, from lens front to VF eyepiece. A very matte screen will have less system "loss" going from F/4 to F/1.4, but will on the other hand be very much darker with a F/4 lens. Nowadays, manufacturers usually prioritize having a "bright" F/4 image, and this means that the losses going from F/4 to F/1.4 is higher.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "loss" here.

The simple way to understand the matt screen/d.o.f. question is to remember that the matt screen is a textured surface which necessarily has peaks and troughs. By virtue of the fact that the peaks are nearer the lens and the troughs are futher away (on a tiny scale), matt screens artificially increase the perceived d.o.f. of the lens at any aperture. Remember that at the film plane d.o.f. is much smaller than it is on the far side of the lens, so that's why the amplitude of focus screen texture makes such a dramatic difference. The sensor itself doesn't have those peaks and troughs, so focus screens always seem to have a little more d.o.f. than the photo ends up with. But an S-type screen is significantly closer to the flatness of the sensor, so it makes it much easier to judge focus accurately at wide apertures when the d.o.f. at the film plane is significantly less than the amplitude of the peaks and troughs on the focus screen. It is impossible to judge accurate manual focus on the standard screens with very wide apertures, and so all that money spent on the 35 f1.4 instead of the 35 f2 is liable to go to waste on the 7D since AF is seldom accurate enough, and manual focus with a well-calibrated S-type screen is the best way to guarantee that your razor thin d.o.f. occurs where you want it.

I've been using my 20D L-plate on my 30d and 40d for the past few years. It did take a few minutes with a dremel to make it fit. The only thing that does not work on my 40d is the remote release. I've also adjusted a 10d plate so it fits every body I've used...however, its looking more and more like a universal plate with every canon release

Is banding going to be a problem with the 7D or not? I am not technically savvy enough to understand what the real-world implications of these discussion are:
