Ok I have a question about the 7D focus. Something I noticed mine doing that just does not seem right. With single center focus point selected, one shot mode, I find that the camera will sometimes give focus confirmation when there is clearly nothing in focus. For example I was using single point on a drop of rain at the end of a needle on a pine. There was clear contrast however the camera hunted back and forth quickly for just a second and then gave focus confirmation, however it was clear that absolutely nothing in the scene was in

Mine does the exact same thing as well. It's currently on it's second trip back to Canon for AF inconsistencies. Hopefully this anomaly will be fixed this time in, or at least in a future firmware upgrade. I can get mine to focus like like this without much effort (neighbor's tile roof), so I'll know if it's fixed within a day of being back. And hopefully Zone AF is fixed this time as well....

Packing mine up now for its second time back. This 7D experience has been poor to say the least.

In One Shot mode > Single AF point (center) > Focus Search ON.. I would expect the camera to continue searching for focus rather than report focus obtained when there is clearly nothing in focus. I think this is the reason for some shots, not just my own, that come out with nothing in focus, when the shutter speed is clearly high enough to take care of handheld blur. Not to mention this happens on a tripod as well.

I was asked about this so jsut posting here for archival purposes.

Here these sites state the shutter lag etc of the 1D cameras and also the 7D specs. I'm not making up stuff.

"Shutter Priorities"
"Responsiveness and user-directed adaptability are clearly demonstrated in the range of the Mark II camera's shutter speeds — from 30 seconds to 1/8000, plus bulb (with user-set adjustments of 1/3, 1/2, or full stops). Maintaining (and contributing to) the camera's high-speed capabilities, the EOS-1D Mark II camera has a shutter lag time of just 55ms (adjustable to as little as 40ms via a new personal function) and the mirror "black out" time is approximately 87ms at 1/60 or faster shutter speeds, resulting in easy viewing even during high-speed shooting at 8.5 fps."

I have seen some conflicting results on diff reviews of the 7D timings, some say it's slightly slower than the 1D times and some reviews say it's double the times, none say it's the same though. Be wary of any 7D review stating the viewfinder black out time of a 7D as it does not actually black out the viewfinder so this is impossible to time on a 7D. lol

(scroll down 2/3 of page for chart of times)

40D: Shutter Lag (SL) = 59 ms, Viewfinder Blackout (VB) = 100 ms
1D2: SL = 40-55 ms, VB = 87 ms
7D: SL = 59 ms, VB = 100 ms
1D3: SL = 40-55 ms, VB = 80 ms

7D : http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E7D/E7DA6.HTM
0.4 second / 400 ms - Power on to first shot
0.131 second / 131 ms - Shutter release time lag approx. Single Shot
0.061 second / 61 ms - Shutter release time lag approx. Prefocused
0.127 second / 127 ms - Shutter release time lag approx. Continuous AF

1.2 second / 1200 ms - Record to play
800 - Lithium-ion Rechargeable Battery
30MB - RAW File Size: 5,184x 3,4564

The Canon 7D's full autofocus shutter response is excellent at 131 ms second using our standard single-point AF test, the same lag as the 50D. Full 19-point auto select AF only slowed to 149 ms.

0.1 second / 100 ms - Power on to first shot
0.094 second / 90 ms - Shutter release time lag approx. Single Shot
0.057 second / 60 ms - Shutter release time lag approx. Prefocused
0.087 second / 90 ms - Shutter release time lag approx. Continuous AF
30 secs 30,000 ms - Buffer clearing time 6 RAW files - Ouch!
50 seconds 50,000 ms - Buffer clearing time 20 RAW + LF JPEG - Ouch!
0.4 second / 400 ms - Display recorded image
1.1 second / 1100 ms - Record to play
2,200 - Lithium-ion Rechargeable Battery
15MB - RAW File Size: 3,888 x 2,592

There was quite a bit of variation of Full AF shutter response, ranging from 80 ms to 20 ms.
