I'm scratching my head a bit though, about how some of the images I took yesterday look. The light was pretty unpleasant - that awful grey Winter light that turns everything into the colour of lead - and some of the files (at only 800 ISO) are just too noisy.
That said, it was "funny" light, and I reckon that the noise is a function of how the camera has metered (lots of snow about, which I'm not used to shooting in, and dark birds - I was in Evaluative) and the images are underexposed as a result.
I have had the same issues when using using manual mode with auto iso under funny light - Underexposes and generates a shocking amount of noise. Be good if Canon do a firmware upgrade with an Exposure compensation mode for Manual. But when exposed correctly = WOW!

Exposure compensation for Manual Just turn the dial. That's why it's called Manual

No shit......Bit hard when in Auto ISO though as it keeps changing the ISO to suit the camera's metering. Defeats the purpose of providing Auto ISO when you can't adjust the exposure............

You lost me. You want not just exposure compensation but the kind that would tracks the light level to counter Auto ISO? And all while in Manual
Same sort of exposure comp setting as per Av or Tv for Manual while Auto ISO is selected , as the 7D I have, constantly underexposes in average light while in Manual mode and Auto ISO is engaged. I am not the only person finding this issue.........
I did not know this, nor do I own the 7D, but found my response from Chuck Westfall very interesting concerning the 7D use in Macro.
Sounds like a great macro body as well as all other uses:
This is just FYI.

Hi, Dan:
The limitations of conventional image stabilization for close-up photography were the
main impetus behind Canon's development of Hybrid IS. But there's even more to this topic
when the EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM is used on an EOS 7D, because that camera has a new
Intelligent Macro focusing function that improves AF performance with EF macro lenses by
increasing the focus detection sampling rate when macro lenses are used for close-ups."

Auto ISO in Manual. Is that Manual?
I'm baffled why there's no auto ISO when in Manual. There are many situations where I want a specific aperture and shutter speed, and it would be very helpful if ISO could then automatically compensate for exposure. It's there in AV and TV, what's so hard about enabling it for Manual?

Hello everyone! Been lurking around here and just thought I'd contribute and post some 7D + 500mm combo shots. I just plunked down some scratch for a new 500mm after borrowing Anthony Whitmore's for a weekend. Wow what a combo!
Alright everyone, don't get excited now, Conrad is KNOWN for his excellent bird images, so it's no surprise that these are GREAT! Let's not all get our hopes up that our own 7D's will create such beauty, remember, it's the PHOTOGRAPHER, not the camera!

Actually, it's primarily the light and the lens in those images - but they're also an excellent example of what the the 7D can do in capable hands, the point being that the 7D used properly is indeed capable of images some "clever" individuals on here are adamant would be all but impossible.

.
Unless those are 100% crops I don't think they are counterexamples to anything that's been discussed in the preceding umpteen pages of this thread.
