Shot my first soccer match with the 7D this past weekend. Very pleased with the performance. Just a few from Colgate's win over American in the Patriot League Championship
I just downloaded one of the images from DPR and converted it in Capture One 5 pro and I must say that I am impressed. I read the DPR review which was talking about the 7D like it was the finest thing since sliced bread so just had to see for myself and I`m not unhappy. 18 million pixels on a 1.6 crop shouldn`t look as good as this. They might have a winner here.
Here is an ISO comparison of the 7D with the 5D2 and Sony a850 and a900 (look down that page for the iso 1600/3200/6400). Quite surprisingly, despite the much higher pixel density, the 7D does better than both Sony full frame cameras at 1600 iso and up.
Back on page 125 or 126 of this thread, I posted some images that showed some artifacting in 7D images. It was pretty bad. Well ... since than I have done a couple of firmware updates on my 7D. In addition, I have been processing my 7D images with the latest version of C1 (v5).
Anyway, my 7D is now producing fantastic images. I don't know what caused the artifacting on those original images. It is still in the files so the camera was malfunctioning. I'm just going to assume the camera failed for some reason and is OK now.
To try and illustrate what this camera is capable of I created the comparisons in the link below. The 7D images run down the LEFT side. The 5DII images run down the RIGHT side. I was just trying to see if there were any problems in these files (I was NOT trying to compare sharpness ... I may come back and create a sharpness comparison over the next day or so). Images were processed with default settings in C1 (which included sharpening, noise reduction, etc.). I included purple fringe removal on the 85mm 7D shots.
The 7D images were shot with an 85mm f/1.8 at f3.5. The 5DII images were shot with a 135mm f/2 at f/4. All images were shot handheld (no tripod). The 7D is way easier and quicker to get something AF'ed. I used one of the off center AF points on the 7D and the center AF point on the 5DII ... again, my only goal with this is to show that artifacting is not an issue.
Sorry, I don't understand your question. But, that may be me because I'm fighting the flu today. The crops are from files that have basically the same layout as the image above. That ISO 400 image is in the 100% crops for the 7D.
I meant to ask if you're using the same file that gave you the artifacts thingy on the Capture One 5 above ?.

No, I shot all NEW files. The original files with the artifacting are still showing it, they are junk. But, the camera is not producing files like that now. I don't know what caused the camera to be not operating correctly when I received it ... perhaps it was left in some wierd state coming out of manufacturing. Perhaps the firmware upgrades I applied to the camera reset it ... I just don't know and never will.
Are you going to contact Canon technical support about the issue?

I would like to see Canon produce a firmware update which addresses this specific issue (maze artifacting and overall image harshness). This "new class" of noise and image degradation is very disturbing, IMHO.
I've read in various places that the best 35mm films provide about 12-40mp of "image data," but the amount of data available for "usable resolution" is more likely in the 6-12mp range. Is Canon trying to emulate film with the noise characteristics of this sensor?
I too would be happier with (relatively) noise-free 12mp images at low ISO rather than noisy 18mp images which require LOTS of work in post in order to improve them to digital standards which have already existed in the past. I realize this may not be possible, due to sensor design tradeoffs which Canon is obviously making.
I re-posit the million dollar question: Can this issue be addressed with a firmware update or is it a fundamental design limitation of this sensor and the internal image processing?
If the issue can't be addressed with a firmware update (or by better QC and a camera body exchange for a newer one) then we'll just have to live with it and adjust our shooting accordingly. That would be very disappointing.
Other than this IQ issue, it's a wonderful body. Almost behaves like a hot Italian girlfriend with baggage.

Hi UCSB,
This is very encouraging.
Do you think you can post links to some of the RAW files from this comparison.
Maybe the ISO-800 files from both cameras.
Thanks.
Hi UCSB,
Which firmware version did you have when you had the problem and which one do you have now?
I just got back from a trip to southeast asia and now got to play with my new 7D which I got just before the trip but did not bring as I needed the wideangle abilities of my FF 1ds3.
After only shooting a couple dozen pictures I am finding much better color response in the greens compared to all my old cameras(1ds3,5D,1D2N). I also am finding the automatic WB to be very good indoors with fluorescent and incandescent lighting, something my old cameras had problems with. Not a big problem since I shoot RAW all the time but will save time in adjusting it in post all the time. Also, the exposure is much more accurate because its color aware.I am also seeing less of the washed out color look with this camera compared to my old ones. The colors look more vivid to me. This is just looking at the replay of the pictures on the camera screen and I haven't yet processed the RAW files with DPP yet,
so I am not sure yet if what I am seeing so far is due to better files or just a better display screen on the camera.
AF tracking so far was very responsive like my 1d2n and very accurate on a couple of flying bird shots.
I need to test it out alot more extensively.
I haven't seen any banding yet but will be on the lookout for it.
The only negative I see so far is more high iso noise compared to my FF 1ds3 but that is to be expected.

At least for me at this point in time, my IQ concerns are gone. I would say these results are impressive. ...Show more →
What really bothers me about this is that the snow man has one lazy eye. Tape the good eye and he/she should correct this in a few months or at least before spring.
