I respectfully submit that I'm seeing the same softness on my screens. Please don't take this as argumentative... only constructive.
Indeed. It would be useful/constructive to see the exif metadata.
Motion blur? Focus issue? The 800 is pretty long. Atmospheric disturbuances at this shooting distance? (Possible, but not likely with 50% crop; the birds were reasonably close).
I received my 7D yesterday. First impressions are mostly positve. I have only taken a few pics with it so far. I am having to read the manual because a lot of controls are different from the previous EOS cameras. It will definitely take getting use to having the off/on switch on the top left with the mode dial. The body seems wider and heftier than the 50D. It is nice that Canon used the same battery as the 5D Mkii. It seems that Canon is catching up to Nikon with some features like the electronic level. One thing I have noticed is that the Menu button does not seem very responsive and sometimes I have to hit it twice for it to work. I hope this is not a defect. I shot some images at ISO 2000 and they were acceptable, cleaned up nicely with dfine.
want pics not CHARTS...just like in the home theater forums instead of enjoying the picture on the LCD you just bought you need some affirmation so you look for charts and graphs to prove your TV has a better picture than say a Sony...why not judge with your own eyes..the 7D is sure to be able to print 16x20s until the cows come home..NO more charts...pics please normal pics not 100 percent crops enough already..putting up a chart isnt really impressive since 99 percent of the real photographers take pictures...geez

A bit concerned that the pictures are not pin-point sharp. Or is my monitor screen bad? Apologies if that's the case.
With 1.6 Cropper paired with 800mm is not easy to master the long lens tech(when handholding). I will see if any Micro adjust is needed.

I can't imagine ME handholding an 800 for a BIF shot
Hats off to ya' for getting the shots at all.
I do not have time tonight to do 100% crops, but last night I shot DII soccer in a light rain under the lights (1/640 @ 2.8 with ISO 6400). I normally shoot a Mk III w/ 300 2.8 on a monopod and a 1Ds Mk II with 135 2 hand-held at this field. Last year I tried dropping a 50D in to the mix, but it just did not do it for me (even though I shot heavily with a 20D before moving up to the pro-bodies). First half of the match saw the 7D w/ 300 2.8 at ISO 6400 on the monopod w/ AWB, neutral style aRGB jpg and standard noise reduction and highlight settings and the Mk III w/ a 200 2.0 at ISO 3200 on the shoulder strap, neutral jpg, no noise reduction enabled (will take care of it in post) w/ the highlight curve enabled. I then switched lenses and ISO at half-time. Because of the occasional rain I was shooting with Aquatech and ThinkTank baggies so not the best scenario. Images were post-processed to pump saturation, contrast and sharpness with the same routine. Once profiles are out I will likely disable or tone down in body NR for the 7D. Because the field of views were so close (300 2.8 x 1.25 vs 200 2.0 x 1.6) the second half saw a much more even mix of use of the lenses as I just periodically switched bodies versus the first where I was mostly shooting the 7D w/ 300 for the added reach, so don't read too much in to the mix of keepers.
More importantly - first impressions: AF and camera behavior was responsive but I NEED to get a battery grip on it ASAP (should be here early next week). Setting knob might be a touch stiffer than 50D as it only moved off of the M setting once. Live view button was triggered twice but that might have been due to handling through/in the waterproof baggies. Bottom line - for high ISO night soccer at least I will not hesitate to shoot with the 7D for my market and will need to seriously consider which body is going to be my primary body as it was nice to have the added reach with the 7D with the 300 2.8. I have youth soccer in daylight tomorrow and then DII volleyball in the evening so after that plus finding some time to really look at some images will hopefully have a much better idea of its long-term role by Sunday evening, but for now I am impressed.

I'm not sure how you reach these conclusions. The 7D looks so much better than the 50D at ISOs that matter that your comments are laughable at best.
It's unreal the conclusions one can draw if one tries hard enough.
Please dont feed the TROLLS
ISO 100-800 on the 7D are the same as on the 50D.
Higher ISOs are better. The 5DII beats the 7D even at ISO 200.
Canon engineers have not invented yet the magic that improves ISO when cramming more megapixels onto a sensor.
Oh, well. Starting to save for the 5DIII
Agreed. I have been checking out the 7D in hopes it might be a 1.6 companion for my 5D when I wanted reach. While the 7D looks to be a great camera, the IQ seems to be 50D quality. That is pretty darn good for the megapixels it has, but not good enough to entice me to go for the additional reach.
going disagree with the last poster...until more PICS not CHARTS are posted then we can say things like this. Ive seen amazing pics already
and the 7D has alot to offer way ahead of the 50d in the areas that count
IQ looks alot better than the 50d

Well all I can say...my 50D at 100-800 was significantly more noisy than my 7D. There is no doubt in my mind at all. I sold my 50D due to low ISO noise that I despised. So ultimately, I don't agree with this review at all.

From what I have seen posted, the noise is not a problem for me. Current software does a good job correcting noise and can only get better. The noise exhibited in the 200-400 range is very fine, nothing like we had to deal with a few years ago.
My concern is with focus, software has yet to fix an OOF shot. If the AI servo can come close to my 1DmkII, I'll buy the 7D. I want a lighter weight spare camera to pair with the MkII but I'm not going to pay $1700 for bells and whistles if it won't focus better than a 40D for half the money....Show more →
Well, this camera is the hotness. The image quality / resolution is astounding for APS-C, IMHO, but it's the little touches from an ergonomic and operability standpoint that really make me happy.
The greatly expanded exposure compensation and bracketing range, the ability to set up the mode dials to work the same in M and AV, the fact that you can configure focus-assist to emit "IR only" (necessary to avoid blinding people with the 270EX's lame focus assist), the quieter shutter, the much more integrated grip (got mine today); the list just goes on. And this is not even the *core* good stuff: viewfinder, AF, sensor, and video.
If this is a harbinger of things to come, the 1D Mark IV and EOS-3D could be epic. Funny thing though, I may be too busy enjoying the 7D to care!
Edit: I forgot to mention the spring-loaded CF card door! (Doesn't squeak either. )

how the heck do you compare random photo to photo? impossible, different lenses, lighting, processing, etc. If you want to compare you need some uniform testing. It makes it quick and simple.
that said the DR and SNR seems so similar between 40D-7D (and even 20D barring lowest ISO DR) that is probably isn't worth bothering about
the real IQ differences are in degree and type of banding and how many MP or by jumping to a different sensor size
and of lots of importance for this camera is how the AF will handle AI servo

so you found the AF to do as well as the 1dsii for soccer?
