That would be my guess .... but it is nice to see more shooters coming back ... I can recall events over the years where the white lenses were few and far between .... guess it's like bell bottom jeans ... everything comes back in style if you are around long enough ...
Per Star War lore "...dark-siders drew power from raw emotions like pain, hatred, passion, and love." IMO, Nikon shooters adopted "dark side" as a term of endearment for their passion and love of photography. We embraced being #2.
The dark side is whatever side you're not on. If you have canon, and you switch to Nikon, you are switching to the dark side. If you have Nikon, and you switch to Canon, you are switching to the dark side. It is usually something that your former friends will say. Many a friendship have been dissolved by camera choices. Okay, so maybe that was a bit overly dramatic....
I sold my canon digital gear, and bought some large format film equipment including nikkor large format lenses. Now that is REALLY the dark side.

I think it's more a 'Star Wars' reference, more people shoot Canon than Nikon, so Nikon have become 'the other lot' or 'the enemy'.
If that were the case then Nikon would be the Rebels, I guess that would get confusing.
