For me I don't see the need to upgrade. I also have the Nikon 70-300VR which is what I use if wanting a lighter setup but for me the 70-200 just has that little something extra that I don't see with the 70-300. But make no mistake the 70-300VR is a fantastic lens and a bargain at its price.

Backup!! I do this for a living and this is the lens I use the most.
If anything would happen the night before I leave for a big event, like the Nationals, I would be BONED!! Not even NPS can get me a loaner in time to help me. The event will go on without me and My corporate clients expect me to perform my work, even if my gear is busted!!

I'm quite happy with the current 70-200vr, even on the D700. If the replacement is signifcantly better across the entire frame, and I can sell my 70-200, buy the new model and have change left over, then yes.(sounds silly, but hey, the SB-800 sells for more now that it has been replaced then when I bought mine) Otherwise, probably not.

I own a 80-200 AFS 2.8 lens which meets my needs in the range that it covers for my D3 and D3X, I would only consider purchasing the “ mythical “ 70-200 AFS VRII if it does in fact become a reality and is noticeably sharper that what I have now. I did purchase the new 24-70 to replace my 28-70 when I discovered the 24-70 was sharper than the 28-70 after testing that I did. I still own my 17-35 AFS 2.8 and have no plans to purchase the 14-24 because I like to have the option of using filters on my lenses. I don’t buy a lens just because it is the newest offering from Nikon, I carefully evaluate a lens before I plunk down my hard earned cash to buy it if in fact I really need the lens.

I loved my 70-200 on a D300. Easily my favorite "daily driver" lens and I put thousands of clicks through it. A gorgeous jewel of a lens.
Sold it because I needed the money. Have not repurchased it because I still needed the money, and because the D3x/24-70/200-400 purchase meant fuhgeddaboutit. But I'm longing for the day I can get another one. And because I bought the D3x to be able to do very large prints at very high quality, then yes... if there's a new one, I'll be second in line after Steve just because he's got a bigger budget.

I'm obviously in the minority with this opinion, but since the 70-200 VR is still selling well enough to be out of stock fairly frequently, at a price higher than its competitor's 70-200 f2.8 lenses sell for, I just don't think redoing it is the first thing on Nikon's list. There's still big holes in the prime lineup, the DC lenses are discontinued (hopefully to be replace), the 200 f4 is great but ooooolllllld, there's no 400 f5.6, and the 80-400 VR needs a makeover way more than the 70-200.

If it's $500 or less to upgrade, I'd try it out. If I love it, I'd keep it. If not, I'd send it back like the Nikon 50 1.4g which wasn't worth the upgrade.
In terms of the newer lenses, the 14-24 is a gift from God. The 24-70 I've found just isn't in the same league as the 14-24 even though some people rave about it. I sold my last 70-200 last december after graham watson said that a new one was coming out. Had to buy another one when it didn't. Won't make that mistake again.

Did the same thing as the rumors floated. Not this time, especially at what I paid for the 2nd one.

i've run into a few times where there has been some obvious vignetting so i have to say i have the new one on order and the older one may go on the block.
p.3 #20 · Will you upgrade to the new 70-200vr when and if it comes out?
I love my 70-200mm, it is probably spending most of it's time on my D700. It was amazing on my older D300, however, I can't stand the vignetting on the D700. Corner sharpness is irrelevant to me on the 70-200 it is sharp enough. I have considered getting the 70-300 for backpacking but for my sports stuff I could use the new one provided that it is as good as we assume it will be.
If I were still a DX shooter I would be getting excited for the price to drop significantly on the original 70-200 in the near future.
