p.2 #1 · Ok, Will I miss 8mm buying a 28-70??

You could possibly miss it if you didn't have the 10-20 (or the 14-24 which you intend to buy later). However, a 10-20 and 28-70 would still be a pretty good kit as the 8mm gap might be big-ish in wide angle terms but you can certainly work with it. Worst case you shoot at 20mm and crop a bit. When you get to the 14-24 28-70 combo then the gap becomes trivial.

There is also the convenience factor, with a 10-20 and 24-70 you will be switching lenses less than with a 10-20 and 28-70.

You might miss it, but it really depends on your shooting style. Also, it would depend if you would keep another wide angle lens handy.

If I had a 14-24 + 28-70, it would be fine. $1,000 is not insignificant either.

In reality you're only missing 3mm (25-27mm). I have the 14-24 and the 28-70 and it works for me. Never saw the need to upgrade to the 24-70.

4mm may seem like a lot of you don't got it, and may not seem as much if you do.

+4

the FOV difference between 28 and 24mm is huge, to me. It all depends on what you shoot. The 24-70 is an even shooter's dream lens.

I am going through this decision now. Have the D700 and the 70-200 VR I. Want either the 24-70/2.8 or the 28-70/2.8. In the past, 28mm was usually sufficient. But once in a while I wanted wider, to 24mm or 20mm (very rarely this wide).

For what the 24-70/2.8 sells for these days, I could have gotten both the 28-70/2.8 and the 17-35/2.8 a bit over a year ago for not much more money (both could easily be found for under $1000 each in mint condition at the time). Now, that difference is at least $500 more for the pair.

If you get a 28-70, I'd get it either here or at B&H. KEH is too expensive. B&H sells nice copies when they come in for around 1K to $1,100, and you can get them here for about that price or a bit less.

As said, a 28-70 with a 10-20 (DX) and 14-24 (FX) will be more than enough to cover everything. 24 vs 28 is a significant difference on FX (on DX it is a non-issue) but only if don't have the 24mm (or wider) covered with another lens. Since you have a 10-20 for your current setup and you will get the 14-24 then I don't see the issue.

Haven't seen many 28-70/2.8's (or 17-35/2.8's) for a decent price here for quite some time. Maybe I have just missed them. I have noticed that several 28-70/2.8's have sold for less than $1,000 recently on eBay. Maybe I will get lucky.

You aren't kidding about the KEH prices. I thought that they had very good used prices when last I looked a bit over a year ago. Much has changed in the past year.

for me.. I'm wishing my 'beast' was just a little longer; I usually have the 17-35 with me as well, though.
