p.3 #1 · Sigma 50mm Review: Yes its better than Canon 50mm f1.4

Dunno how others do it but I am fortunate to have an Aden Camera near me. I bought the first copy and tried it out in my normal shooting situations, side by side with the Canon 1.4 that I already have. Also I read a ton of comparables online and chatted with a few Siggy owners. Once you filter out the "opinions" your left with objective reviews from users who really "wanted" the give the Siggy a "hell yes". even those shooters were a little concerned about the focus issues. The SOOC color and contrast and smooth bokeh from 1.8 thru f2 made most of them rate it a keeper. I did find that the guys who had Canon's pretty much stuck by the big C excepting the built quality as compared to the Siggy.

I found the two similar enough to not be driven to buy the Siggy. The Canon 50 is still more than able to outresolve the sensors in everything right up to 1Ds MK3...I'm going to spank it like a lazy donkey until it breaks all the way.

Eyebrock,

I didn't try the Sigma in a store, I have it and used it for about 1 month, made a review about it and that's what I posted on FM.

I appreciate your hard work and willingness to share your opinions. I recommend posting a short summary paragraph here along with a link to the externally-posted article rather than posting such a long message here.

Take care,

Thanks. I thought about just including the amazon link, but since people get lazy sometimes I decided against that and posted the whole review here.

That's exactly why I chose to make and post this review. I generally don't post my amazon reviews on FM, but this review was the exception because I really believe this, otherwise great, lens received a very bad reputation from early model tests. Most of the leading review sites have given it the thumbs down because of the early focus issue.

In my case I took a risk because of positive buyer reviews posted on B&H and Amazon. So I took the risk and ordered it from B&H.

I will keep that in mind if there is another review

here is my flickr photo stream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/57403498@N00/

The first 4 pictures are taken with aperture ranging from f1.4-f2.0 the next two physically compare the Sigma 50mm and Canon 85mm. The next two pictures compare the feild of view of the two lenses at a distance of 7ft.

Pictures were only cropped and resized. Let me know what you think

edit: hmm... just noticed that the @ symbol is breaking the link, try copying and pasting the link into your browser.

It's not better when +20 MA still isn't enough to correct focusing issues, and the fact that it's now on its fourth week at C.R.I.S. I would have played the exchange game with Amazon if I'd known calibrating the lens was going to be such a PITA. If it comes back with any sort of front/back focus problem, I'm ditching Sigma and going with the inferior Canon 50 1.4, at least it will probably work and if it does need servicing it won't take a ridiculous amount of time. BTW, I live near C.R.I.S. so I personally dropped the lens off. I can’t imagine how long this nightmare would take if I had to add in shipping both ways.

I do think it is impossible to write a review that claims unambiguously that one lens is better than another without owning both lenses or at least having both lesnes on hand to test one against the other

Your title: "Yes its better than Canon 50mm f/1.4" when in the text of your review:

"Since I do not own the Canon 50mm f1.4 I will compare this lens to Canon's 85mm f1.8 lens."

IMO, it hurts your credibility a little bit. You are making a strong statement which you cannot support having owned or even having directly compared the two lenses. Given your reasoning is probably sound, the Sigma seems to be as good as the 85 and the 85 is probably better than the Canon 50. However I wouldn't have such a bold title if I hadn't compared both

+1...hell...+10

I don't think you should even be mentioning the Canon equivalent unless you did a side by side comparison with some data-based tests.

If you really want to push it you could probably say that the Sigma 50mm has all the benefits of the Canon 50mm and the performance is stellar as well. Even that is kind of pushing it though.

And as you have it stated your review sounds horribly biased and honestly, in my opinion, pretty inaccurate.

Just my humble opinion.

Bingo Jon,

I just purchased a Siggy 50 1.4 and own the Canon 50 1.2 and have images shot with a previously owned Canon 50 1.4 and am looking to do my own comparison.
I have a friend who swears the Sigma is at the top of the heap of these three.
Time and a little shooting will tell.

The Canon 35mm L is hands down better than the Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens. I have never owned or used either. Yet I can say that with confidence.

Thanks for sharing, but I can't disagree more. As a customer who uses the product I can speak as to why I chose one product over the other. So long there are no misleading claims in my review it serves a positive purpose.

I look forward to your review, though I think the 1.2 will come out on top.

There is always one village idiot that shows up, does not read the whole thread, and makes downright useless comments that add nothing to the thread.

May I ask you why you had to be that person?

In a general note, there are many late comments that have nothing to do with the thread topic. Those comments are made in question of the qualifications of the review and reviewer, like someone asking if I get paid to do reviews for example. I have full confidence in the value of this review and frankly if some doubt its value or intended purpose then that's really their problem. From my perspective they really haven't helped improve the review with such comments.

I am thankful on the other hand to those who made positive comments and suggestions and please keep it coming.
